Kuhn, who has called Raptors' games from the sidelines since they became an NBA franchise in November, 1995, spoke at the Oakridge Bible Chapel and shared stones of his youth and rise to announc ing fame, all while remain ing loyal to his deep Christian faith. Kuhn encouraged all in attendance to stay faithful to God and for those who H erbie hadn't embraced the Lord to give it consideration. Kuhn told a story of a period in time when he questioned his faith, whether or not "God really cared about me." It was April, 19% and Kuhn was prepar ing to announce basketball games at the Atlanta Summer Olympics, a job that he was looking veiy forward to. However, he instead. "So just go with the flow, let God choose your path," Kuhn encour aged. The speech concluded with Kuhn exciting the kids in the audi ence by welcoming the Toronto Raptors in his patented voice. Kuhn asked the audience to imagine what it would be like to have an arena full of chanting bas ketball fans cheering in the name of Jesus, hoping that one day it would become a reality. He was no longer wanted as an announcer at the Olympics. At the same time, Kuhn and his mother, whom he considers his role model, were having spiritual conflicts with their church. A decision was made by them both to aban don the church, which left Kuhn without a place to practice his spirituality. "So in a matter of a week, I lost my dream of announcing basketball on the world stage at the Olympics and I lost my place of worship, my church," said Kuhn. "It was one of the lowpoints in my life." But fate took a turn for the better and Kuhn's life would change dramatically in the months that followed the spring Kuhn ofl996- After speaking with a close friend, Kuhn discovered the Grand African Episcopal church, which fumed out to be only a five-minute drive from his house in the Beaches area of Toronto. It was there that Kuhn found a greater appreciation for God and his own spirituality and on July 28th, 19%, something special happened. A woman sat next to Kuhn, someone he had never seen before. "That woman is now my wife of 21 months and her name is Stephanie," said Kuhn. "The point being, that July 28th, 19% would have found me in Atlanta if I had gotten my way, but God chose a different path for me and I ended up meeting my wife in Toronto at my new church An Oakville Beaver Feature To advertise in this section call 845-3824 Fax:845-5516 Duct Cleaning Sale!
