That means it's time to have fun with vacations, swimming, sports and more. Before you head out for fun, take a few minutes to look over these summer safety tips. On the road... Take these steps to help you stay safewhen you're in the car. • Wear your seat belt. • Use both the shoulder belt and the lap belt. • If possible, sit in the back seat because it's the safest place for a kid. • Keep your head, arms, feet and legs inside the car while it is moving. If you get lost... Sometimes you can get separated from family or friends. If you do, follow these steps. • Don't get upset. Stay calm and alert. • Stop. Take a minute to think. • Stay where you are in case people are looking for you. Give them a chance to find you. • If no one comes for you, look for a police officer or another adult you can trust. • If you cannot find anyone to help you, find a telephone and dial 911. (This is a free call on pay phones.) Before you go anywhere this summer, be sure to memorize your address and phone number. They are always very important in emergencies. Want to do something with your children? Join us this summer on Tuesday mornings for crafts, music and lots of fun. You don't know how deep the water is or how powerful the current may be. • Wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or scooter and when you're skating or skateboarding. • Don't stay out in the sun too long, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Ask your parent(s) about a sunscreen to help keep your skin safe. • Be careful when playing around swing sets. • Stay away from where mowers are being used and don't ride on them. • Wearing shoes and light-colored clothing can help protect you from bee stings. • Do not pick and eat plants. You don't know which ones could be poisonous. • Don't play near outdoor grills or bonfires. Only adults should use lighter fluid. • Never walk up to a stray dog. Even the nicest animals can get excited if they don't know you. If you see an animal acting funny, be sure to tell an adult about it. http://www.infotechkids.ca
