The year was 1964. Lyndon Johnson was in the White House, Vietnam was a Southeast Asian country no one had yet heard of, and Beatlemania was in its infan cy. The Baby Boomer generation was just entering the workforce, gas was cheap and plentiful and horsepower, in the form of big, hulking V8 engines, ruled the roads. Into this combustive mix of youth, money and power the Ford Mustang arrived, kicking and bucking out of its Dearborn, Mich. Corral. With it came one of the greatest automotive marketing successes of all time. Truth be told, the Mustang was a myth. This was not a brand new car, but a tricked-out Ford Falcon, that ordinary, plain-Jane mom- and-pop compact that was origi nally developed in the mid-1950s. What Ford's then marketing boss Lee Iacocca did was spruce it up with a sharp exterior, toss in some bucket seats and some 'sporty' gauges and add optional small- block V8 power from the Falcon Future and Fairlane. The result was on of only two, or perhaps three of the most sig nificant cars ever created. An auto motive cult car was bom. Thirty-five years later, buyer tastes and automotive styles have changed-- a lot. After nearly seven million copies, the Mustang may no longer be the youth market ride of choice. But the old war horse can still kick up its heels and put on a show. Physically, the '99 Mustang receives a nip here and a tuck there, which has created more angles and creases fore and aft when compared to last year's car. The Mustang now sports a set of narrower, wraparound headlamps that are all the rage these days. And, in a salute to its origins, there are new hood and side scoops that are supposed to remind you of the first-generation model. The Mustang's biggest changes, however, are the signifi cant increases in both standard and optional power output. The base 3.8-litre V6 engine is now rated at 190 horsepower, an increase of 40 compared to the previous model. Credit for this 27- per-cent gain mainly goes to a new cylinder head design and intake manifold changes. There's more good news for the Mustang GT. The 4.6-litre SOHC V8 that arrives with this model gets a new high-lift camshaft, coil- on-plug ignition and bigger valves. The result is an engine that's now rated at 260 horsepow er, a gain of 35 from last year. All Mustangs benefit from a lower numerical axle ratio that will provide added punch off the line. If that's not enough to stir the blood of every true believer, Ford recently released the 1999 SVT Mustang Cobra. This coiled snake's 4.6-litre DOHC power- plant is good for 316 horsepower, 11 more than the previous SVT unit. The Cobra also receives its own unique independent rear sus pension setup as opposed to the live rear axle found in lesser Pony cars. Both the base, as well as the GT can be ordered with a five- speed manual or optional four- speed automatic transmission, while the Cobra is only available with the manual box. The Mustang leaves the bam with a strong assortment of feature content, such as air conditioning, cruise control, anti-theft system and AM/FM stereo with CD play er to name a few. For its 35th year, the legendary Mustang has evolved into a sophisticated sports machine, with added brute force to keep it well ahead of the herd.
