Oakvilk I 847-5671 Chrysler Caravan: still the standard for measuring minivans H aving driven Ford's now front-rank, four-door Windstar and Honda's take-no-prisoners Odyssey, it was time to go back to the benchmark to see exactly who is raising the bar in the minivan segment. It is hard to believe the first Chrysler mini- van came down the production line in Windsor on Nov. 2, 1983 and Chryco has never looked back. It has been so spot-on the demographics that it could one day rival the Ford Model T, the Volkswagen Beetle, and the Toyota Corolla as the most popular passenger vehicle ever built. Building on being the first- ever minivan out of the gate and relentlessly canvassing owners for ideas for improvement, the Chrysler Caravan and Grand Caravan present consumers with the widest range of minivans on the market, ranging from a choice of short- and long-wheel base versions, to front- and all- wheel-drive, powertrains and standard features long enough to I j i m I ROBINSON RoadWorthy fill this page. There are actually 12 differ ent versions of the Caravan and they come with a choice of three engines: a 3.0-litre V6 (150 hp) with four-speed auto matic, a 3.3-litre V6 (158 hp) with four- speed automatic and a 3.8-litre V6 (180 hp) with four-speed automatic or the four- speed AutoStick transmission that allows sequential shifting for sporting- minded drivers. Staying ahead also means offering what the public wants and ______ on all Grand Caravans that means air conditioning, seven-passen ger seating, roof luggage rack, storage drawer under the front passenger seats and floor mats. A driver's side sliding door panel is standard on all Grand Caravans and all versions have second- and third-row bench type seats with Chrysler Easy-Out Roller Seats. My test version was the Grand Caravan LE with a list price of $33,745 with a host of standard features like a nifty little net between the front seats to hold things like a CD wallet or lunch box. That is in addition to cup and juice box holders every where. What I did like was the power window/ rear vent/door locks controls all set high on the driver's door and operable by the thumb as well as the index finger. 1999 Chrysler Grand Caravan My tester had the $1,065 optional leather seating with low back buckets in the second row (quad buckets added another $665). Traction Control (just $275) was a very smart option given the size and weight of this vehicle, not to mention the pre cious cargo it normally trans ports. The 3.8-litre engine in the Grand Caravan is a lusty piece with 180 hp and 240 lb/ft of torque. With a curb weight of 1,746 kg (3,850 lbs) and a length of 5,070 mm (199.6 inches) this is a very big vehicle. With the dri ver set high and bolstered by lots of glass front and on both sides, the fairly long wheelbase of 3,030 ipm (119.3 inches) makes for very comfortable rides whether in city or highway. If you decide to toss the Grand Caravan around, the amount of vehicle between the engine and the rear wheels trailing way back there almost 120 inches away makes more for boulevard turns than ral lycrossing. If you have lots to carry, the Grand Caravan again is the benchmark with 1,515 litres (53.5 cu. ft.) of cargo volume with the rears seats removed and 4,771 litres, (168.5 cu. ft.) with the sec ond and third rows removed. With $665 worth of 16-inch wheels and all season touring radials (a 17-inch rim is offered on the ES front-driver version) and $35 for the "Smoker's Group", the grand total for the Grand Caravan was $37,305. Chrysler calls its current mini- vans the "gold standard" of the segment. It should be no sur prise, that having invented the template, others are racing to cash in on a winning formula. And that's why it's not so much that all minivans are start ing to look alike, it's that they are all starting to look like Chrysler minivans. lease o r M i bu y Accredited Test S lllC e & Bepair Facility 1961 Glenleven Chrysler -5 £ c Royal Windsor Dr. £= 3 2 3 8 8 R o y a l W i n d s o r D r i v e , O a k v i l l e • 9 0 5 - 8 4 5 - 7 5 7 5 to use the classifieds? quarter million.
