Photo by Peter C. McCusker Snakes to guard your garden By Carol Baldwin ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR Karen Dyne is affectionately known as the 'snake lady.' Although she's not crazy about the nickname, she'll accept it as way of acknowledging that her "guardin' snakes" are a hit. These ceramic creations may guard the garden with their beady little eyes, but they're really decorative stakes for holding up those tall, unmanageable plants. These colourful creatures may be bright eyed, or dozing on the job, or even disguised in dark shades. But whatever their stripes, or spots, or size, each is hand-crafted by Dyne. Her snake menagerie was bom out of a quest to find something to support some sweet pea plants, which, by the way, didn't survive, but the snake stakes that were created to help them grow certainly did. "I needed something to tie the sweet peas to, but it had to be some thing nice. So I made a few of these snakes," explains Dyne, adding that she thought of snakes because they are naturally found in the garden and are long. "Then somebody said to me, 'You should try to sell some of these.'" That idea appealed to Dyne, an art teacher at Iroquois Ridge High School, who has always wanted to buy her own kiln and set up her own studio. So she took her friend's advice and started making more stoneware snakes. "I chose stoneware because I'm very familiar with ceramics. It's something that I already knew how to manip- THE FEDERAL PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVE ASSOCIATION OF OAKVILLE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING & DELEGATE SELECTION Thursday, June 24 ,1999 QUALITY HOTEL Registration 6:30 p.m. The annual general meeting will be held at the Quality Hotel in Oakville (Q.E.W. and Bronte Road) at 7:30 p.m., including the selection of delegates to the 1999 National General Meet ing. "I did a lot of experimenting, too, because I knew I couldn't use earthenware, so I used stoneware. I learned a lot about glazes by doing it. It was a whole new learning experience for me." Then last year, as her snakes began taking shape, she saw a sign seeking art work for the May Court Club of Oakville's Art and Artisans by the Lake. So she applied. "They said they'd love to have the snakes because they're so different. They have a purpose and they're deco rative," she recalls. "Because it was my first public show and I did really well, I decided that this was going to work for me." And it has. Dyne has continued to participate in local shows and is delighted that her sales have been high enough for her to buy her own kiln and set up a perma nent studio at Industrial Art Space on Wyecroft Road. She also has a per manent retail area in Crafters Cove on Lakeshore Road West where she displays and sells her "guardin' snakes." "People think they're funny and cute. And, of course, I've changed the style," says Dyne, noting that her first horns were all bright and colourful. But she now makes some terra cotta and some black reptiles to break up the flood of colour in a garden. "They're not as cute. They're more practical...terra cotta sort of blends right in. It's something a little more than a stick, but not another colour among a zillion colours." No matter how successful Dyne's snake stakes become, she says she'll always be a teacher first, helping the younger generation express themselves through art. "I think that kids really do start to think about them selves and the world in different ways when they look at it through what people make and what people look at," says Dyne, who has been teaching for 12 years now. "Art is a really good way to get kids to explore. They learn a lot about their world through what they see." So, her stoneware snakes will continue to be created in the evenings and on weekends and, of course, during the summer. But then, she doesn't think of her ceramic crea tures as work anyway, but more as a leisure activity that helps her relax. "I don't look at it as another job," she says, adding that her ceramic creations are simply an extension of her love for gardening, and that she'd like to extend that passionate pursuit to include fountains and bird baths. "I've just made my very first bird bath.. .because I have a kiln and I can afford to play with it...The bird baths will lead to the fountains. I really need to work bigger, and bird baths allow me to work big. And once I get the hang of it, I've got some fountain designs that I'd like to try out." • The apartment dweller's ultimate dream is to own a house with a little greenhouse/studio off to the side where she can relax and cultivate her garden along with some complementary snakes, bird baths, and fountains.
