This holiday season, shoppers can give mem- orable gifts that make a difference by purchasing a Living Gift from Ten Thousand Villages. Not only will this gift be satisfying to give and receive; it will also enable families in developing coun- tries to raise animals, grow vegetables and send their children to school - all the basics in life that many of us take for granted, particularly during the holiday season. The Living Gift is a special holiday program of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), designed to inspire alternative gift giving ideas that meet simple human needs for good health and a decent living. Here's how it works: customers choose from four Living Gift projects, buying it for a loved one, col- league, teacher or friend. In return, they receive a handmade ornament and card to give to that person, detailing the gift given on his or her behalf. "More and more, people are looking for gifts that express the true meaning of the season," says Ingrid Heinrichs Pauls. "A Living Gift does just that. It shines through the glitz surrounding the holiday and reminds us of the simple ways to give the most important gift of all: hope for a better future." This year, projects include providing corn to help families in Burkina Faso farm through drought conditions; pur- chasing chickens for Croatian families returning home after years of political unrest; providing school uniforms and learning materials for children in Laos; and purchasing goats for a project that brings people together from different sides of the Rwandan conflict to build peace and community through agricul- ture. Project donations range in price from $25 to $40. "It's wonderful to see how a relative- ly small gift can make such a huge dif- ference in someone's life," says Heinrichs Pauls, store manager at Ten Thousand Villages in Oakville. "And it's a great way to buy for that person in your life who seems to have everything." Individuals interested in purchasing a Living Gift, and other fairly traded prod- ucts from around the world, are encour- aged to visit Ten Thousand Villages at 189 Lakeshore Rd. E. during the Living Gift Festival , Dec 1-4th , Thurs. and Fri 10-8, Sat. 10-6, Sun. 12-5. Make the season bright for families around the world who need it most. Together, we can make a global differ- ence.
