I Wednesday, July 7, 1999 The Oakville Beaver THE OAKVILLE BEAVER teams P O R T S Cobras win prestigious Robbie The Oakville Wiberg Cobras Under 13AA Girls rep soccer team came up big this weekend, winning the prestigious Robbie International tournament, their third tournament success of the sea son. It was the first time for a number of weeks that the Cobras had an injury-free full squad available which really paid off given the weekend heat. In round-robin action, the Cobras came up against unknown Bame Spirit, Pickering Power and West Rouge Cougars. The Cobras dominated each game, getting stronger and improving their passing game as the tournament progressed. The Cobras recorded wins of 3- 0,4-0 and 7-0 with Katie McKenna earning the shut-outs in the first two games and sharing the shut-out in the third game with goalkeep- er/sweeper Erika Taugher. Goal scorers for the Wiberg Cobras in round-robin play were Karen Zmirak (6), Ally Skinner (2), Leslie Martin (2), Erika Taugher (2), Katie McKenna and Katie Capron. The Oakville Cobras expected to meet local rivals Burlington in the semifinals, but came up against Scarborough United who elimi nated Burlington in round-robin play. The Cobras had defeated Scarborough earlier in the season in the final at the East York tourna ment. The Cobras' finishing was not up to its usual standards, and the Cobras could easily have been four goals up at the half. In the second half, the Cobras got the game's sole goal courtesy of a strong break away run and cool finish by Zmirak. In a game in which the scoreline flattered Scarborough, Katie McKenna earned the shut-out. The semifinal win set up a final against Dixie who carry five regional players on their squad. In tropical-like heat, the Cobras defeated Dixie 2-0, using their superior passing and possession soc cer game to tire out their opposition. Dixie rarely threatened and after numerous chances, the Cobras were able to convert two set plays from Laura Bandy, the first a spectacular volley by Erika Taugher from a comer kick, and the second a great header by Leslie Martin from a free kick. Katie McKenna was able to preserve her weekend of clean sheets, coming up big, yet again, with a penalty kick save in the dying minutes of the game. The Cobras defence was superb all weekend with outstanding per formances by Laura Lorenz, Ally Skinner and Katie Capron. The Oakville Cobras are sponsored by the Wiberg Corporation, and Marlar Homes, Centreline Truck Lube, Becton Dickinson, and Branham Bros.
