In this form, the Regal delivers 240 horsepower, enough to bust through the seven second 0-60 mph barrier. That's not as fast as the bad old days, but still quick enough to send some athletic-looking (and sounding) wannabes scurrying for cover. Fortunately, the 1999 LS and GS Regals have more than straight-line acceleration up their sleeves. These cars have been designed from the ground up to provide superb handling, thanks to four-wheel independent suspension, four-wheel ABS-equipped disc brakes, a newly upgraded steering system that emphasizes both quickness and road feel, and an enhanced-for-1999 traction control unit. In addition, the Gran Touring pack age, standard on the GS and optional on the LS, includes suspension bits that are tuned to provide a firmer ride with reduced body roll. As you might expect from a car with Buick badging, the standard equipment list is extensive. The LS features include dual zone air conditioning, air filtration system, cruise control, dual power heated outside mirrors, remote keyless entry, power windows and door locks, AM/FM/cassette sound system and a tilt and leather-wrapped steering wheel. The GS gets all this, plus 16-inch wheels and six-way power driver and front passenger seats. On both models you can add extras such as heated leather seats, steering wheel-mounted radio controls, eight- speaker 'Monsoon' sound system and a power sunroof. The Regal has evolved into a real driver's car, a potent grand tourer that allows you to select the version that suits your palate. Please pass the Pepto. The 1999 Buick Regal is all about choices. The kind of choices you might find in a restaurant that serves Chinese or Mexican food. In both cases, you can select from the part of the menu that contains fewer taste-bud scorching, tear-inducing dish es. Or you can pile enough herbal fla vorings and chili pepper sauces to guar antee a three-alarm fire in your intesti nal tract. So it is with the Buick Regal. This mid-size nameplate, with its roots dat ing back to 1973, has offered both a sedate, almost nondescript model, and a bad-boy, licence-revoking mean machine. Witness the Buick Grand National, a mid-1980s Regal-based muscle coupe that, with its 3.8-litre 245- horsepower turbocharged V6 engine, was capable of reeling off 0-60 mph times in the sub-five-second range and was quicker than the fastest Corvette. There was also a limited-production (around 500) Grand National GNX that upped the ante to a claimed 300 fire- belching ponies. All that unbridled power was short lived, however, and by 1988 the Regal's fire had been all but extinguished. The product planners and marketing types at Buick never forgot the Regal's split-personality heritage, and, with the current car's introduction in 1997, they've returned to offering a clear choice in performance packaging. Pick the Regal LS and you get a 3.8- litre OHV V6 that produces a respectable 200 horsepower, five more than last year. Not sluggish by any means, but perhaps not quite enough to make you a contender with that Bondo- infused late-'60s musclecar rumbling next to you at the stoplight. But order the Regal GS (for Gran 1999 Buick Regal ★ Four-door sedan available in LS or GS versions. ★ 3.8-litre OHV V6 (LS), or 3.8- litre OHV supercharged V6, developing 200 and 240 horsepower, respectively. ★ Four-speed automatic trans mission. ★ Optional engine delivers strong dose of performance. ★ Base and optional suspension place emphasis on handling. ★ Lots of built-in luxury equip ment in true Buick tradition. ★ Attractively-styled exterior. ★ Base price: $27,800 THE ALL-NEW SONATA IS YOUR TICKET TO M ID -S IZE LUXURY.
