Wednesday, July 7, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C7 AUTOMOTIVE A U T G R I P Firing order Firing order refers to the order in which the afr/fuel mixture is ignited in the cylinder heads, as it relates to piston location. To do this at the right time, the ignition system has to know which piston Is at the top of the cylinder bore, on the compression stroke. The camshaft is the 'brain' which tells the distributor when to 'fire.' Here's what firing order is. How do I find out the firing order? You'll often see the firing order cast into the engine block, or, in some cases, printed in the owner's manual. Find the firing order before you endeavor to change spark plugs or spark plug wires. This engine's firing order 0 0 0 0 In the example below, the first cylinder fired is number one, the second is number two, the third to fire is number four and the fourth to fire is number three. Piston numbers Possible locations Side of engine block Top of intake manifold Front of engine block The rotation of the rotor means that wires from the appropriate cylinders must be hooked in sequential order at the distributor. Therefore, you can follow the firing order around the distributor cap from the number one position. o The crankshaft, which rotates to move the pistons i and down, is designed to put the correct pistons at th ^ top of the piston bore at right time for ignition to occur. The salt, dirt and brake dust accumulates around tires and wheels contribute to corrosion. Today's wheels come in a variety of materials and fin ishes so choose a wheel cleaner that dissolves brake dust and is right for your finish. Some protectants can attract road grime and dirt, leaving your tires brown and whitewalls, yellow. • Wash your car regularly, once a week, preferably by hand with a soft towel or sponge.
