There he competâ€" ed against 100 students from 25 schools, and ranked fourth. The top five students competed in England; the others hailing from Winnipeg, Halifax and two from Vancouver. He competed in impromptu speakâ€" ing, acting, and persuasive speakâ€" ing. He was selected for the Nova Scotia competition by teachers Paul Bentley and Carol Bysouth in recognition for his proficiency in school debates. "When I qualified for the World public speaking competition, one of my teachers just ran into the classâ€" room to tell me, and everybody cheered. "Getting to the World competiâ€" tion was a really big goal for me." Dhir has been interested in pubâ€" lic speaking since his enrolment into Grade 9 at Appleby College, and for the past few years, acted in a number of school theatrical proâ€" ductions. "Debating provides me an opportunity to intellectually debate issues with my peers." Last April, he placed second at the Shakespeare on the Platform competition, held by the English Speaking Union of Canada. "I enjoy Shakespearean acting, and I hope to audition for a theatre comâ€" pany this summer."
