Inspiration came from his teachers credits Dave Creighton and Jim Henderson, two teachers at Oakvilleâ€"Trafalgar High School, for inspiring him to write. (Continued from page 10) In Grade 12, Gatenby submitted a long poem (which he describes as a "wonderful piece of juvenilia") to Creighton. It was the first time he had shown anyone outside his famiâ€" ly his work. The poem was returned with a mark of 95% and the comment: ‘There is nothing to say. You are a writer.‘ "It was an incredible boost," said Gatenby, who has not doubted his artistic callin@ since. Although Gatenby has not lived in Oakville since he left O.T. to attend York University‘s Glendon College, his parents still live here and he enjoys coming back to visit, particularly taking a stroll through the old part of town. "One of the joys for a historian is walking through the old houses and old streets," said Gatenby. "People don‘t realize most of the great metropolis of Canada would have looked‘l.fke"i(."" moun e mm m e n an sn ons n Canadian wines, especially the VQA wines from Ontario, have perâ€" formed extremely well. Ever since our industry established the Vintners Quality Alliance, our wines have been accepted internationally and have won medals at nearly every competition. Keep this in mind the next time you buy a wine from Canada and look for the VQA label on the neck of the botâ€" tle. It assures you that the wine is one that is produced wholly from grapes grown in the area to the highest stanâ€" dards. By the way, I believe Ontario produces the best Ice Wines anyâ€" where. 1993 saw the first announcements from the medical profession that the moderate consumption of wine is benâ€" eficial to one‘s health. I understand that this is a hot subject as there is also the abuse of alcohol to be considered, but prohibition did not work nor will it ever, so we are doing the right thing by educating the public. I have plenty of material from the most respected health professionals and universities, which actually advocate the moderate consumption of wine and I would foresee that by the end of ‘94, the health aspect of drinking wine will be a wellâ€"known fact. I support every organization that is dedicated in their fight against impaired driving. 1 also have a suggesâ€" tion. The National Department of Justice in the USA has determined that the percentage of people arrested for impaired driving who report drinkâ€" ing wine is 2%. Can you imagine how few impaired drivers we would have if everybody would drink wine? Could it be that wine drinkers are more responâ€" sible? ‘The past year was one of surprises and a year, that if all is taken into conâ€" sideration, was quite positive to us the consumers. Best of all, it promises to be even better in 1994. While we are on the subject of drinking, if I had an award for responâ€" sibility, and that may be a thought for next year, it surely must go to Seagram Canada. "How to Talk About Alcohol" is a free program designed for parents with preâ€"teens. The easy to follow audio cassette and handbook is 1994 promises to be even better packed with information and facts which every youngster and parent should know about alcohol including how to reach your youngster, all about peer pressure, and other difficult situaâ€" tions. Give your children a good start in life and order your free kit by writâ€" ing to: Seagram Canada, P.O. Box 847, Station H, Montreal, P.Q. H3G 2M8. Well done, Seagram! Another award I may have in place by next year could be the Best Wine List of a local restaurant as selected by myself and my readers. Keep this in mind and if you find one that you feel is exceptionally good, write to me.
