Recently, de Bruyn, a local landscape architect, undertook a complicated plan to lift a white pine tree into a newly refur bished backyard in east Oakville. "Last year, the house was given a completely new land scape, with new shrubs, a new fence and a pond being put in," said de Bruyn. "A while back, one of the new trees planted became infested with insects and died, so we were replacing the tree with a new one." The new tree, only 300 cm (10 feet) high, caused quite a commotion in front of the house. A crane was brought into the driveway to lift the tree over the house and into the backyard, to avoid damaging any of the new landscape. 'Typically, in a situation like this we would use a bobcat," said de Bruyn. "However, the damage to the landscape would have been far greater had we used a bobcat and therefore the cost to the client would be high er, so we elected to go with a crane." By using the crane, the cus tomer only paid $800 for a half day of work. The bobcat would have caused damage to the property and de Bruyn estimates that the project would have taken two days to complete at a cost of $2,000. "The process was very smooth," said de Bruyn. "It was our best option and in the end that turned out to be the case." A replacement tree is lifted by crane over the house into the backyard. » Daylilies add colour to summer lull Last Saturday, we attended the annual meeting of the Ontario Delphinium Club at Hazel, Amy and Joe Cook's garden on the west side of Peterborough. This is a beautiful site, approximately 20 acres, on a hill overlooking open countryside. Delphiniums in the south were a casualty of the heat wave, but the northern location and higher elevation here allowed about 100 plants to show their five to eight feet high spires of blue to pink delphiniums. These are grown from English-type seed obtained through the club. We had a show, plant sale and auction, mostly of delphiniums with mixed trays of hosta, magnolia, and peony seedlings, some shrubs, trees and canna lilies. These sold mostly for $1 each and those left were auctioned off raising $100 for the club. The delphinium show was limited but in spite of the early season some fine spikes were shown. The annual meeting elected the officers and held the draw for donated prizes. There were about 50 members present from Guelph through to Owen Sound on the west to Ottawa in the east and a good showing from the Newmarket area. We drove via the #407 to Markham Road where we picked up Steeles Ave. which became Durham #4, then Taunton Rd., a good straight route, ending up at #115 to Peterborough. We avoided the #401 completely, and drove the 190 km in two-and-a-quarter hours. Year 2000's meeting will be at Mary JOHN SIMKINS In Y o u r G arden Robinson's garden in Guelph, the hot bed of hor ticulture. The club purchases seeds from the Delphinium Society, England, and distributes them to the members enabling them to grow mag nificent delphiniums. There is one primarily social meeting per year held at different locations in Ontario. Membership is $5 per year. The spring flowers are finished, the roses are spotty, and the annuals are gathering strength for the big push. Hosta and daylilies are preferred plants to con tinue the colour flow with lilies providing interest centres. Their flower and foliage takes over the main areas, catches the eye, and brings the garden alive. The great advances in these plants over the past decade have made them more attractive and easi er to grow. There are many ways to use them separately (See 'Hosta' page C2) I ifinifiei&s whv 4450 CORPORATE DR.
