D2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, July 21, 1999 Q.E. Park grad 'tagged the walk in Formula Ford race * CASCAR series continues this weekend in Cayuga (Continued from page D1) on the Molson Indy pit row was a thrill. It was a memorable return for Buck who raced the downtown Toronto circuit, but never tasted victory, as a driver in the Players GM series in the 1980s and early 90s. "It was a bit different back then," Buck said of the course layout. "They've changed the last corner, but it's still mostly the same. But it helps to have put some laps in here ... you get to know the nuances, what it takes to go fast here." Buck positioned himself well, winning the pole. Established in 1981 by Tony Novotny, CASCAR has developed into the premier sanctioning body for stock car racing in Canada (with an eastern and western Canadian series, out of which a national champion is crowned). While comparisons to the multi-million dol lar and ridiculously successful NASCAR Winston Cup series are unfair, CASCAR's rac ers welcome the comparison from the stand point of a personal challenge. "This series has really become professional, all the teams are stepping up to the plate in the way they look and behave," Buck said. CASCAR teams are all hustling their prod uct with uniform enthusiasm. The result is ever increasing exposure, marked by a deal with CTV to broadcast tape delays of CASCAR races, beginning in August. The CASCAR series continues this week end in Cayuga. - f r o m T o r s ta r N e t w o r k C oyotes'season finale Friday, playoff opener Saturday Oakville's Matt White really "enjoyed the weekend" in the Formula Ford Series race at the Molson Indy, although obviously not the result. The 19-year-old Q.E. Park graduate qualified eighth, moved up to sixth place by the end of the first lap, edged up to fifth and was gunning for fourth place, five laps or so into the race when he "tagged the wall." It only caused a little damage but it was a disappointing ending to his afternoon of racing. It pretty well sums up his year, so far, in the Formula Ford Series. He's been right in the thick of things but has run into some bad luck. "I've only finished one race," he said. The previous weekend, he said it was "suspension fail ure." In Montreal, in another exciting venue that was part of the F-l weekend, he was running sixth when the motor malfunctioned. This weekend's result dropped him to 22nd place from 19th, out of 53 drivers. But he's confident the bugs are worked out and is look ing forward to the second half with his Young Drivers of Canada sponsored car. "It's been a bit of a struggle, but it's looking quite good. We've got a brand new engine from a top engine manufac turer in the States." White went through the M inor Oaks Hockey Association (MOHA) house league system and also enjoys snow boarding and skiing in the off-season. The Formula Ford race was won by 17-year-old Unionville driving sensation Billy Asaro. Sunday's games would not get any easier for the Coyotes, as they played the first place M ississauga Rattlers and the third place Durham Devils. The Coyotes played their best game of the tournament Sunday morning as it took the first place Rattlers until the final 30 seconds to ensure their 7-4 win. The Coyotes stayed with the R attlers throughout the game, as they trailed by a goal until the last minute. Two late Rattler goals sealed the win, but coach Ron Piercey said, "The guys had nothing to be ashamed of after that performance." Sunday afternoon, the Coyotes finally got on the winning side of things, as they handled the Durham Devils easily in an 8-5 win. The Coyotes owned this game from the opening face-off as they scored on their first two shifts, and never looked back. G.M. Jay Labelle, stated, "If the guys played the way they did today on Saturday, they would have won three of four this week end instead of one of four. H ere's the scoring summary for the Coyotes over the weekend: Carr 4g, la ; Jeff Elia 2g, 7a; Dave Dunn 3g, 5a; Luke Domski 5g, 3a; Ryan Fitzsimmons 2g, 4a; Jamie Barlow lg, 3a; Mike M uldoon lg ; Steve E lia lg ; Kyle M acdonald 2a; Shane Labelle 3a. The Oakville Coyotes played their second of two crossover tournam ents this past week end in M ajor Junior A roller hockey. Unfortunately, the tournament, which pits the west division (which the Coyotes are part of) against the east division, did not go as well as the first tournament fo i'the Coyotes, as they only managed one win in four games. The weekend started off Saturday morning with the Coyotes dropping a 5-4 overtime loss to the second place Brampton Warriors. "This was a game we should have won," commented Coyote leading scorer Dave Dunn. The Coyotes dominated the opening half but had little to show for it, as they trailed at the half 1-0. The Coyotes were down 4-2 late in the sec ond half before they mounted their comeback. A goal by Luke Domski with just over a minute left sent the game into overtime, where the Warriors wasted no time finishing off the Coyotes only a minute in. The Coyotes' day went from bad to worse as they lost their second in a row to a much weak er Pickering Phantoms squad which took a 5-1 half-time lead and never looked back en route to an 8-4 win.
