The Ram Air system is cred­ ited with boosting the power rating up 5 horses to a 175 hp @ 5200 rpm. Any engine will perform better if you improve its breathing but most of the GTs power increase is proba­ bly due to better exhalation, not inhalation, cour­ tesy of the increased diameter dual exhausts. Either way, total power still adds up to an invigorating 20 horses more than last year's 3.1 liter V6. Okay, it's no V8. But stomp the gas and the 3400 V6 pulls enthusi­ astically with a baritone rumble that leaves little to be desired in either sound or fury. I think my daughter summed it up best by say­ ing, "It's quiet until you don't want it to be." As mentioned before, the Pontiac Grand Am is available in two trim levels and comes in Sedan or Coupe versions. The SE model comes complete with tilt steering, ABS and traction control, console, fog lamps, tachometer, and air conditioning. A move up to a < GT model adds more niceties like power mirrors, cruise control, deluxe bucket seats, lower ground effects fas­ cia and a CD play­ er. But more importantly, the GT model con­ verts the com­ muter Grand Am into a driver's car, thanks to the peppy Ram Air V6, the stainless steel dual exhaust, firmer springs and sport-tuned sus­ pension and big­ ger 16-inch wheels clad in Goodyear Eagle R S - A Performance rub­ ber. You can jazz the GT up even further with options like leather seating, upscale stereo sys­ tems with steering wheel controls, tire inflation moni­ tor, sunroof and remote keyless entry.
