McCusker BIG B U C K S FROM BIG BIK E: The CIBC, defending Ontario fundraising champs in the sixth annual Big Bike for Stroke, collected $13,600 in pledges towards $76,464 raised by 13 teams riding the 30-seat bike through downtown Oakville recently. The amount, an increase of 40% over last year's total of $54,000, surpassed a $75,000 goal set by organizers. The event is organized annu­ ally by the Oakville chapter, Heart and Stroke Foundation, to raise funds for stroke research. Last summer, members of the Halton Regional Police responded to many reports of thefts from homes while people were busy in the back­ yard. They do not want a similar problem this year. A home on Woodview Drive was the target of just this type of criminal on Sunday, July 11th. Residents of the house were in the backyard when someone entered through an open garage door. The thief walked into a room in the home and took a purse. While this may seem like a less than serious crime, the work that needs to be done to replace things like a health card or driver's licence is time consuming. The loss of credit cards can be expensive. To reduce the frequency and ease of this type of crime, officers rec­ ommend you keep your doors locked when you are home. This is even more important if you are preoc­ cupied in the backyard. If you know someone who commits this type of theft, Crime Stoppers wants to hear from you.
