first white boy born in Prince Arthur's Landing ; well-known hardware merchant ; John William Alexander Ferguson ; retired from Marshall Wells Limited 1952, after 41 years of service ; predecessor Marks, Clavet and Dovic ; resided on Arthur Street until 1879 when block destroyed by fire ; moved to corner of Pearl and Court, then Regent Street ; attended Central School for a few years ; joined Herald Printing Co. at age 11 as apprentice ; delivered papers ; at 13 worked for Caleb Shera and Company in dry goods ; cookee at Stanley in 1888 ; discovered hardware in 1889 working for Wells and Emmerson ; married to Jessie O. Mark ; photo
