Skills have risen over 30 years ( C o n t in u e d f r o m p a g e 1 ) He denied that the downloading of the system has put Halton on the brink of a United States style 'pay as you go' model. But it would only take a change in policy to alter that, said King. "Under the current system we're very different (from the Americans). If the legislation changes it could open up to a different type of system. But I don't see that happening in the short term." When King took his first job in ambulance services in the 1960s, train ing consisted of earning a first aid cer tificate. That changed when the Province took over in 1967. Now paramedics must complete a college course. Most of the shifts have occurred in the last decade, said King. "The system really kind of flatlined for a number of years," he said. "But it has taken off in the last 10 years." According to consultants, ambu lance service in Halton will cost $9.4 million in 2004. That's up from the $5.6 million cost today. Those estimates are based on the Region keeping the same ambulance system that is in operation today. But the Province announced earlier this year that it will pay 50% of the price tag.
