OYS Sailing School launches new fleet By Scott MacArthur SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The Oakville Yacht Squadron (OYS) Sailing School celebrated the launching of eight new custom-made boats last weekend, designed specifically to teach children how to sail. The Mosquito dinghys, as they are called, are the next generation of sail boat, says OYS director Bill Merry. 'This is an improved version of the Optimist dinghy, which was first made about 50 years ago," said Merry. 'Those boats were created to introduce young people to sailing, much like the Mosquitos are now. The Mosquitos are built with fibreglass and are more durable, as opposed to the Optimists that were built out of two pieces of ply wood." The boats, which were designed by Don Oakey, of Ontario Yachts in Burlington, will be put to immediate use. "Our youngest group of students will benefit from the use of these' new boats," said Merry. 'There are about eight children in that class, so it's a real ly good fit for all involved." The OYS runs sessions of two week intervals during the summer months at a cost of $345 per session. Both children and adults are offered beginner pro grams, and for the more experienced sailor, racing programs are offered as well. Along with the new boats, the cur rent season has provided plenty of excitement for those involved with the OYS. "We're very proud of our young sailors," said Merry. "They've had a wonderful time so far this year, and the weather has been excellent, provid ing great sailing conditions." The OYS, which is a non profit organiza tion, has a simple goal in mind when teaching people of all ages how to sail. "We're here to foster a love of sailing," said Merry. "It's such an enjoyable experience to be outside on the lake on a beauti ful afternoon. The more people who wish to have that opportunity and want to learn how to sail, that's what we're here for."
