8 : Jump rope family leaps into Partici By Steve LeBlanc CANADIAN CHAMPION STAFF Asked about her team‘s involvement in é the ParticipAction 150 Play List campaign § in Toronto May 31, Shaelyn DesRoches ofâ€" fers a response that‘s equal parts silly and succinct My butt jumps were a big hit," quips the 13â€"yearâ€"old, the youngest of three sisters of a competitive jump roping family at the $ forefront of the Jump Dance Fit Academy (JDFA) now operating out of St. George‘s â€"= Anglican Church in Campbellville. 8 As amusing as watching someone negoâ€" & tiate a rope with a bouncing behind, the & DesRoches‘ commitment to providing a 3 fitness opportunity outside of the tradiâ€" E tional sports realm is by no means a joke. € Less thar a year after starting up, JDFA owner/operator Isabel DesRoches now has 60 youth in her raiuks â€" coming from all walks of life. "We‘ve got athletes, kids who haven‘t found their sport of choice and others who just needed to get more exercise," she explained. A mix of all three were part of the Particiâ€" pAction 150‘s twoâ€"hour demonstration at Young and Dundas Square, where a wide variety of sports and physical activities were showcased. Keeping things simple While JDFA‘s crew teased the crowd‘s interest with some of its more creativâ€" ity maneuvers, it tried to keep things as simple as possible in an effort to show that jumping rope is within everyone‘s capability. "Anybody can do it," stressed Isabel, who was invited to attend the ParticipAction 150 Play List event after an organizer saw her website and was intrigued by the family keeping fit together aspect of the business. "This isn‘t training for the Olympics or Muhammad Ali here." Now coaching the JDFA competitive jump rope team, middle daughter Shelâ€" by, 18, was thrilled to be part of the fesâ€" tivities in Toronto. "It was fun, a different experience." Added Isabel, "One of the organizers said we drew the biggest crowd of any station there. We got a lot of ‘Wow, you guys are so hit‘ comments. It‘s the synchronization when 10 kids are doing the same thing that makes them want to try it." Having been part of several schools‘ Jump Rope For Heart fundraisers and now gearing up for its summer camps, JDFA recently closed out an impressive and encouraging â€" inaugural season with a pair of topâ€"10 finishes at the naâ€" tional championships in Kingston after strong showings on the provincial stage. "For us to do this in our first year, to beat many teams that have been around for a long time, is great," said Isabel.
