Supplied photo Milton Players presents Gibson and Sons By Julie Slack CANADIAN CHAMPION STAFF You‘ll laugh, you might cry â€" it‘s a feel good love story with some "comph". That‘s how director Ryk Simpson of the Milâ€" tom Players Theatre Group (MPTG) describes the team‘s latest production, Gibson and Sons, which opens this weekend. Written by Kristen Da Silva Kristen, Gibson and Sons recently won the Stage West Pechet Family Comedy Award. Helping his father save their struggling smallâ€" town funeral home has gotten in the way of Harâ€" ry Gibson‘s love life. Desperate to settle down, he turns to an unconventional method of meeting a woman: an online Russian bride service. When his bride Katya arrives, with her acerbic sister Eva in tow, the Gibson family is thrown into a tailspin. Harry needs to convince his father that he knows what he‘s doing, convince his friends and family that he hasn‘t lost his mind, and explain to his brideâ€"toâ€"be that their marital home will be shared with the dearly departed. Gibson and Sons is a hilarious, touching comedy about family, love and making all kinds of relaâ€" tionships work â€" even the unexpected kind that sees an embaimer meet a blonde bombshell. "It‘s a fantastically fun comedy; it‘s a comedy that has a bit of a love story. It‘s one of those plays that feels good and you leave feeling satâ€" isfactory. You‘ll enjoy it, but not just because it‘s funny," he said. "It‘s so satisfying too." Simpson explained that the play is the story of a family, who lost a loved one and has been tryâ€" ing to keep the funeral home business running while coping with their loss. "It‘s harder than they expected, and the son Harry is the lonely guy," Simpson said. "It doesn‘t poke fun, it honours the funeral home business. "It‘s a standard comedy with little moments that are farcical," he said, noting one scene in parâ€" ticular where you see one of the sisters fighting with a squirrel. "It‘s a crazy scene." What makes the play super enjoyable, said | Simpson, are the actors. "It‘s a fantastic cast. They all know comedy and how to make it work well," he said. "From the beâ€" ginning to the end, you‘re rooting for the characâ€" ters â€" right from the moment you meet them." Da Silva, the playwright, also stars in the producâ€" tion, returning to the Milton stage after her THEA awardâ€"winning turn in last fall‘s The Melville Boy She‘ll be available for a question and answer after the opening night show, providing guests with a chance to find out what it‘s like to love theatre, both behind the scenes and on stage. Acting in the play are Michael Anania, Scott Sykes, Mark Davies, Arleigh Curran, Kristen Da Silva, Esther Chung and Gillian Taggart, Gibson and Sons runs at the MinMaxx Theatre at the Milton Centre for the Arts tomorrow (May 5) and Saturday (May 6) at 8 p.m., on Sunday (May 7) at 2 p.m., May 11â€"13 at 8 p.m., and Saturday, May 13, at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $29 and available at the box office, or by phone (905) 878â€"6000 or go to www.milâ€" toncentreforthe arts.ca.
