, February 9, 2017 | 6 Careful consideration needed on federal electoral reform wwiw.insidehaiton.com | MILTON CANADIAN CHAMPION | Thursday | Bird of a different feather The caption describing the photo featured on the front page of last week‘s issue of the Champion contained inaccurate information. The bird snapped snacking from a Hilton Falls Conservation Area parkâ€"goer is a redâ€"breasted nuthatch. The Champion regrets the error. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has broken | his campaign pledge to reform the counâ€" try‘s electoral system before the next fedâ€" | eral election. For this, he must take his poâ€" | litical lumps â€" he‘s earned ‘em. However, in this particular case, it was a wise decision to go back on a commitment that should never have been made in the first place â€" and certainly not so emphatiâ€" cally. Electoral reform is badly needed at our variâ€" ous levels of government. The firstâ€"pastâ€" theâ€"post (FPTP) system is lacking. Parties can be wildly underâ€" or overâ€"repreâ€" sented in the House of Commons, based on voter support breakdowns, or even absent all together. When the results are tallied, many votes simply don‘t matter. That said, we should not rush into picking a replacement for FPTP federally. There are a lot of factors that need to be considered when party politics and strategic voting come into play, and voters pay more attenâ€" tion to party leaders than the candidates | on the ballot in their riding. And there are numerous options available for reform â€" from ranked ballots to various versions of proportional representation. We must choose carefully. Our collective fuâ€" tures depend on it. Efforts to evolve our electoral system must continue in the name of democracy â€" not just federally, but provincially and municiâ€" pally as well. As is well known generally the Milton boys are a light lot, depend on the speed for which they are noted and avoid the "rough stuff." According to Milton‘s manager and others who saw Saturday evening‘s game, the lakesiders are the opposite â€" big and slow, not in it with real hockey players from whom they can win only by knocking them out. it is announced that the rate of wages on counâ€" | ty and provincial roads this season is to be 20¢ an hour for men and 40¢ an hour for teams.
