The fair is open to students in Grades 7â€"12 from Hamilton, Halton, Haldimand, Norfolk, Brant and Six Nations. Halton Region students have a history of perâ€" forming well at the event, which offers cash awards and scholarships, and for some lucky students, allâ€"expense paid trips to national and international competitions. This year‘s Canadaâ€"Wide Science Fair will be held in Reâ€" gina and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles. "BASEF is one of the most successful science fairs in the country, with 540 student particiâ€" pants last year, but there are still a number of schools that do not send any representatives to compete at this local level," said Michelle Lafontaine of BASEF‘s Outreach Committee, adding that organizers are hoping to attract even more participants to this year‘s event at Mohawk College in Hamilton. After winning a science fair at their Milton Esâ€" carpment View Public School in Grade 8 in 2016, Rania Saita and Safia Damiji, both 14, joined forces to compete in BASEF last spring and ended up taking home the Dr. Laura Blew Social Science Award and Silver Merit Award. "We had to come up with a topic and we chose to take a slightly different path and chose a topic on psychology," said Rania."Most people did their projects on engineering but human psychology really appealed to us. Our title was Pain or Gain: What‘s the Greater Motivaâ€" tor? The main idea of the project was what was more motivating to students, being punâ€" ished or rewarded." Rania said the competition was "extremely tough because there were so many great projects." "The experience was really great and | learned a whole lot about different topics. I think Safa and | did really well considering it was our first time entering." "The preparation was probably the hardest but most fun part of it all," said Rania, now a Grade 9 student at Jean Vanier Catholic Secâ€" ondary School. "We would stay up late and work extremely hard o1 the project.
