Kari Veno, a senior communications consulâ€" tant for Halton Healthcare, confirmed in an email, there has been an increase in influenzaâ€" * like cases in the emergency departments at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH), Milton District Hospital and Georgetown Hosâ€" pital, as well as laboratory confirmed influâ€" enza cases. The number of influenza cases at Halton Healthcare is much higher in December 2016 and January 2017 compared to the correâ€" sponding months last flu season, Veno added. Halton Healthcare has also been experiencing _ a rise in admissions for pneumoniaâ€"triggered (or associated) with influenza primarily affectâ€" ing the very young and people over 75. Although the number of influenza cases _ has increased, Veno said activity has not yet peaked in our area and Halton Healthcare is expecting a surge of cases over the next couâ€" _ ple of weeks. A total of 1,948 cases were reported by the end of last year, which is the most recent data available with influenza A (H3N2) being the most common subtype detected. Symptoms The elderly, children and people with chronic illnesses are at greater risk of more severe complications. Symptoms include: fever, chills, cough, rumnny eyés, stuffy nose, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, extreme weakness and tiredness. Some people may have vomitâ€" ing and diarrhea, although this symptom is more common in children than adults. Residents are reminded that hospital emerâ€" gency departments are for urgent, immediate and unscheduled healthcare services.
