Just ask Jodi (not her real name). A few months ago, the young woman was at the end of her rope. With stress levels and deâ€" pression mounting, she didn‘t know where to turn for help. "Everything was happening at once, and | felt really down and out of control," said the Halâ€" ton resident. "Work was stressful, | broke up with my boyfriend and the depression I‘ve dealt with since | was 18 was getting worse. was scared that | would live that way forever and things would never get better." It wasn‘t until a friend at work noticed she was struggling and suggested she seek help that Jodi felt a glimmer of hope. However, finding help wasn‘t as easy as expected. "I tried to find a counsellor to talk to, but there was always a wait," she said. "Most places in the community said they couldn‘t see me for at least six months â€" even a year â€" and there was nothing for me in the meantime unless I could pay for my own therapist, which I couldn‘t." Wait times for mental health services are a reâ€" ality for many seeking support. That‘s where Mental Health Association expands services into Milton ton, the oneâ€"onâ€"one sessions allow people to talk to a counsellor about a wide range of conâ€" cerns, including relationships, family violence, depression, anxiety, anger, sexuality, abuse, grief and loss, life changes, selfâ€"esteem, alcoâ€" hol and drug use, gambling, parenting issues, suicidal thoughts, among others. "Sometimes, people feel stuck and don‘t know where to turn for support," said Radhika Subramanyan, the local branch‘s chief execuâ€" tive officer. "If you‘re feeling down, stressed, worried or having trouble coping in any way, we can help you improve your wellâ€"being." Jodi experienced the benefits of the free walkâ€"in counselling service first hand. "I just walked in and talked to a counsellor right then," she said. "She helped me work some things out and talk about what I could do to cope better. It was so helpful and just what | needed to keep going. | don‘t know \ where I‘d be if I didn‘t go in that day" Since launching its services in Oakville in 2014 and in Burlington last year, the Halton | Region Branch of the CMHA has provided the CMHA Halton Region Branch‘s free walkâ€" | in counselling services come in.
