CNIB Halton-Peel partners with other service agencies Thanks to an evolving partnership, access to services has improved for those with a hearing or visual impair­ ment. The Canadian Hearing Society (CHS), Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) Halton-Peel, and the Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) of Halton have been working together to improve linkages to their services. Staff from the three agencies have recently been through an orientation process, and have been trained to recog­ nize when their clients may benefit from the services of another. The train­ ing session included an overview of the many new devices available for clients who may have trouble hearing or see­ ing. Although staff from the three agen­ cies were aware of what the others had to offer, these in-depth information ses­ sions allow them to give their clients more information up front, should they believe they would benefit from addi­ tional services. Pauline Kissel, a case manager for the Information and Referral team at the CCAC Halton, has already referred sev­ eral clients to the CNIB. "Many people do not realize that they can benefit from the services of the CNIB with any degree of sight impairment," said Kissel. "One woman I spoke with knew about the CNIB, but was hesitant to call. When I informed her of the things they could offer, she agreed to allow me to make a referral on her behalf." All three agencies are committed to supporting their clients in maintaining their independence in the community. Ron Leduc, regional director for CHS says, "We're pleased to be enhancing our partnerships with other community agencies. There are times when we serve clients with multiple needs, and it's great to know that we can refer clients to the most appropriate people." Cathy Tufts is an orientation and mobility instruptor from the CNIB Halton-Peel. She says, 'There have been times when I have visited a client and noticed that in addition to their loss of sight, that they were also having more and more trouble with various tasks around the home. In the past, I might have suggested that they call the Community Care Access Centre of Halton, but really couldn't tell them what they might be able to offer. Now I can give my client a better understand­ ing of what's available to them and how to access it." Clients do not need to go through any of the agencies to access the ser­ vices of another.
