Oakville Chamber Orchestra to host romantic concert The Oakville Chamber Orchestra is set to throw a little romance into their next concert. With Charles De­ muynck serving as artis­ tic director, Shades of Love will be held Satur­ day, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. at St. John's United Church (262 Randall St.) and Sun­ day, March 4 at 3 p.m. at St. Simon's Anglican Church (1450 Litchfield Rd.). The concert - featuring mezzo-soprano Cassan­ dra Warner, soprano Sara Schabas and violinist Tif­ fany Young - will be high­ lighted by Schumann's Frauenliebe und Leben and the Waltz from Tchai­ kovsky's String Serenade. Tickets - available at the door or at oakville- chamber.org - are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors and $20 for students. Children 12 and under are free. Grandmothers group throws spotlight on unsung heroes of Africa A Halton-based grand­ mothers group will hold an event aimed to inform and inspire residents about the unsung heroes of Africa. Put on by Oomama, Grandmothers: The Un­ sung (S)heroes of Africa and the Canadian Sister­ hood that Supports Them is set for Tuesday, Feb. 27 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Sir John Col- borne Recreation Centre (1565 Old Lakeshore Rd.) in Oakville. The event will include videos, songs and discus­ sions about African grand­ mothers left to care for their grandchildren orphaned by the AIDS pandemic. Oomama is one of240 Ca­ nadian grandmother groups part of the cam­ paign led by the Stephen Lewis Foundation to sup­ port grandmothers in Afri­ ca whose grandchildren have lost their parents to HIV and AIDS. Admission for the event is $5, which includes coffee and sweets. Sounds of Love & Hope concert to benefit Stephen Lewis Foundation The Sounds of Love & Hope will fill Oakville's St. John's United Church on Friday, Feb. 23. That's when Mervyn Russell, Oomama and the Power of One Team of St. John's will host a benefit concert in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a silent auction, marketplace and refreshments, followed by the concert at 7:30 p.m. It will feature Meryvn Russell (tenor), Charlene Pauls (soprano), Herb Wil­ liams (pianist) and the Raise Her Voice Chamber Choir of the Oakville Choir for Children and Youth. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students, avail­ able by emailing Wendy at nursewjm@gmail.com. The Stephen Lewis Foundation is focused on ameliorating the effects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa.
