Luke's Legacy, estab lished in honour of the lit tle boy, is a charity that has raised $178,900 for the Car diac Critical Care Unit at SickKids since it began in 2009. This year, to mark what would have been Luke's 12th birthday, the family will host its 10th annual Sweethearts for SickKids event Feb. 11 at Longo's, 469 Cornwall Rd. between 11 a.m.-4 p.m. For $5, participants will receive a nut-free, heart- shaped sugar cookie to dec orate. There will also be a silent auction and raffle prizes, including TFC, Rap tors and Toronto Rock tick ets and a chalet getaway in Ellicottville. Members of the Oakville Fire Depart ment will also be on hand to sell cookies outside Lon go's. "Losing Luke was the most difficult thing I have ever had to go through in my entire life," said Luke's mom Carolyn Holmes. "Losing a child not only causes a physical ache, but an emotional ache that never goes away. This event is a way to remember Luke, a strong, courageous little fighter who always had a smile and hug ready to give, but also a way to thank SickKids for taking such good care of him." This year's goal is ear marked for an additional mobile ECG cart to support the increase in SickKids patients. "None of these areas are currently supported by government funding, so we rely on philanthropy to provide these types of needs for families and for the dedicated staff who treat kids with the most complex conditions," said Constanze Bleeker, Sick Kids Foundation. "Thanks to the support of groups like Luke's Lega cy, we are able to continue to provide the necessary equipment furnishings and training within the Cardiac Critical Care Unit at SickKids."
