ns id eh al to n. co m O ak vi lle B ea ve r | T hu rs da y, F eb ru ar y 1, 20 18 | Crime Stoppers of Halton celebrating 30 years of tips from the public 10 NEWS 1,185 arrests, millions o f dollars in property, drugs recovered over three decades TIM WHITNELL twhitnell@burlingtonpost.com Jodi Richmond would love to boast about the many hundreds of cases that have been solved in Halton thanks to tips pro vided to police by mem bers of the public. However, it is the assur ance of anonymity, the es sence of the program, that the detective with Halton Regional Police Service says prevents her from dis cussing such matters. The police co-ordinator of the Halton Crime Stop pers program says there have been significant cases solved over the course of the 30-year run of Crime Stoppers in Halton due to anonymous tips re ceived from the public, and she'd like to talk about them, but she can't. She said the public will have to be satisfied know ing that their information, submitted to the Crime Stoppers telephone line, website or by text, may have been the difference in solving a case and leading to the arrest of suspects, the seizure of drugs and/ or weapons and possibly the return of stolen prop erty to its rightful owners. Detectives from Halton police follow up on every anonymous tip that comes in from the public through Crime Stoppers, said Rich mond. However, Crime Stop pers is not the police. Each entity is an independent, non-profit, registered charity that helps solve crimes by taking tips from anonymous sources. No names are taken through Crime Stoppers and caller ID is not used. Rewards can be paid out anonymously to people whose tips lead to an ar rest although Richmond noted that many people el igible for a reward don't pursue it. The Halton program is one of 87 in Canada with more than 1,700 Crime Stoppers programs around the world. Crime Stoppers of Hal ton held a 30th anniversa ry event at the Halton Re gion headquarters on Bronte Road in Oakville on Jan. 23. Richmond and Jan • See ORGANIZATION, page 11 Graham Paine/Metroland Rocco Neglia, left, vice-president of claims for Economical Insurance, presented Crime Stoppers of Halton with a $50,000 cheque at Crime stoppers of Halton's 30th anniversary event held Jan. 22 at the regional administrative building. Accepting the cheque is Jan Wescott, vice-chair of Crime Stoppers of Halton.
