For the second year, The Bay is spon soring The Bay Mother Daughter Walk for Heart and Stroke with registration taking place Aug. 20-22nd at the Oakville Place Bay store. "The Bay is excited, once gain, to join with the Heart & Stroke Foundation as national title sponsor of The Bay Mother Daughter Walk for Heart & Stroke," said Marc Chouinard, pres, and COO, the Bay. "We are continuing our commitment to women's health by pro moting the walk through pre-registration and inviting our customers and associ ates to sign up in our Bay stores." Last year, the walk saw 15,000 walk ers in 47 communities raise over $780,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. This year the walk takes place here on Sept. 26th. The Foundation is predict ing that 19,000 walkers will join the fund raising effort. The Bay's goal is to increase the number of participants this year by offer ing a special incentive to those who pre register in stores. Registrants will receive a discounted registration fee and five AIR MILES reward miles. In addition to registering participants, customers will also have a chance to pur chase a heart cut-out for $1 at the Bay will all proceeds going to the Foundation in Oakville. "Thanks to our partnership with the Bay, more and more Canadian women learn about their #1 health concern, heart disease and stroke," said Rick Tallop, pres, of Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. Treat your investments like a business Today's column will be the last in a six-part series on strategies to success ful investing. Previously discussed top ics included investing in equities, investing globally, living with market volatility, creditor proofing investment assets with segregated funds, and using the relatively new concept of wrap accounts to reduce investment risk. Our final topic is the strategy of managing your investment portfolio like you would a business. Start with a written financial plan. Most successful businesses have a busi ness plan. A plan, whether business or financial, encourages you to state and, therefore, focus on specific objectives. With a financial plan, the starting point is preparing a statement of net worth. List all of your assets and then deduct your liabilities. You can use this initial statement as a benchmark to pensate for the lower return these investments provide by increasing the amount of your savings. Not only do you want to reach your financial goals, but also you want to do it in a manner that reflects your own investing style. In summary, manage your invest ments as if it were a small business, and you should increase the chances of being financial successful. The investment strategies that I have covered in the past six columns come from extensive investment research, as well as my own observations on watch ing individuals reach their financial objectives. We hope you can put these ideas to good use. Consider your current investments that will grow in value, plus, any future savings that you will add to your port folio. Now that all your ideas are on paper, it will be easy to have an annual review. Go through all the details and compare your progress to the projections and make any adjustments or updates that are required. Gradually, your focus will shift from specific investment concerns to the likelihood of you achieving your stated financial objectives. That alone is a major advantage. Much of the focus in the investment business is on buying a "good" invest ment. An investment is only "good" to you if it moves you closer to your stat ed goal. For example, if you want conserva tive investments, you may need to com PETER W A T S O N Dollars & Sense measure your progress in the future. Create a list of your financial objec tives. Some might be short-term such as saving for a down payment on your first house, medium-term for your chil dren's post-secondary education or long-term for retirement savings. Develop a strategy to accomplish these objectives. Make some projec tions to decide if these objectives are obtainable and to determine what you have to do now to ensure you reach them all.
