The same chemicals that break down grease, however, will also strip the wax right off your car. Use a specially formulated car wash to preserve the wax on a car's finish. Follow the instructions and mix up a bucket of soapy water. Using a high-qual ity wash mitt, begin washing the vehicle from the top down. This will prevent tracking dirt from the lower part of the car onto the sides, where it can scratch. According to Fran Lockwood, Ph.D., vice-president of Technology for the Valvoline Company and a Director of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, today's clear coat paints are formulated to look good for years, but require special care. "Polishes and waxes should produce maximum color, depth and gloss protec tion," she said. "Look for products that are heat resistant, inhibit corrosion and oxidation and protect against hard water spots, acid rain deposits and bird droppings, which are filled with acids and dyes." Nissan posts one-month sales record Barely a month after the Canadian launch of an all-new model, Nissan's Maxima executive sports sedan has posted an all-time one-month sales record. More than 9,000 prospective customers previewed the new year-2000 Maxima at Canadian dealerships on the evening of June 8th. In the first three weeks, Nissan Canada Inc. posted one-month sales of 1,043 Maximas - the highest since May, 1997, when 820 Maximas were retailed. The month was also the best June on record for Canadian sales of the Nissan Pathfinder - 822 retailed, topping the 771 sales posted in June of 1997. Your car is what it eats Whether or not you change your own oil, make sure you know what your car's being fed. Use a brand name product that carries the current SJ rating and the American Petroleum Institute (API) seal of approval which sets the standards for motor oil in North America. Select the vis cosity grade rec ommended in your owner's manual. Most manufacturers suggest 5W-30 or 10W-30 which are versa tile for winter and summer dri ving. Choose a for mula that best suits your dri ving needs. For example, if you drive a high per formance car, tow a boat or trailer or com mute to work, consider using a synthetic blend rather than a conventional oil. For superior pro tection and opti mum perfor mance, use a full synthetic oil. "While con ventional oils provide adequate performance," said Fran Lockwood, Ph.D., vice-pres ident of Technology for the Valvoline Company and a Director of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, "syn thetics can increase horse power and fuel economy by reducing friction and wear at engine start-up."
