In work by David Merritt, Tomiyo Sasaki, Chrysanne Stathacos and Laura Vickerson, the ever popular bloom emerges as a m otif to be re interpreted for a contemporary audi ence. Merritt, a Hamilton-born artist, has exhibited his work across Canada, including recently at the Art Gallery of Ontario in its Present Tense series. Well known for his laborious installa tions of twigs and branches pinned directly to the wall, for this exhibition he arranges plastic facsim iles of petals and leaves to evoke a 'vanitas' motif. In the gallery's video salon, New York-based artist Sasaki uses video, set in a lush floral installation, to show the lotus in the process of blooming. Shown throughout the U. S. and Canada, Sasaki's video instal lations use the inherent qualities of the video medium to try "to paint the visual feel or visual memory" of a particular culture. Also based in New York, Stathacos uses flower petals as support for pho tography. Typically interested in retrieving the ritual and magic of ancient sites and seeing the spirit within nature, Stathacos uses petals as organic references to the fragility of life. Vickerson's painstaking method of pinning rose petals to organza calls to mind traditional wom en's work. Flowers, she says, have historically served as symbols of celebration, death, beauty, romance and seduction. In this site-specific installation, the Calgary artist has attempted to address some of these ideas and to ultimately acknowledge how tempo rary all things natural really are. Through their work with an estab lished natural subject, this group of artists has raised new questions and prompted renewed discussions about hum ankind's relationship with the natural world. Petal Pushers is co-curated by Marnie Fleming and Su Ditta. In conjunction with this exhibition, Oakville Galleries will publish a cata logue with an essay by Fleming and statements by the artists. Lunch-hour talks will be given by the curator on Sept. 16th and 23rd at 1 p.m. Gairloch Gallery is located at 1306 Lakeshore Rd. E., and is open Tues days to Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call 844- 4402. It 'S B ack -to - S c h o o l" tim e. W h e re did the su m m e r g o ?
