In passing he paid tribute to the commercial conâ€" cerns and other organizations feaâ€" turing the necessity of conservation. On discovering America, COlumbus was said to have been greatly impresâ€" sed by the magnificent forests of this new continent. "Trees for a million years‘" he was quoted as exclaiming. Without â€" conservation, the speaker pionted out. the forests would not last for a fraction of a million years. , Dr. Giardine held that the floods, such as those hitting in the Timmins area last year were due to wholesale slaughter of trees along the waterâ€"sheds. The destruction of the trees, the speaker made plain, also seriously affected wild life. Farming land along the shores of Lake Onrtario was being washed away at the rate of an acre a yeav. It was the scientific theory that at least 25 per cent cf Ontario should be covered by forest for the best results and safety, but at present the percentage was 5 per cent. The situation in the West was zeld up as an example of the evils resultâ€" ing from lack of measures for conerâ€" vation. Timminsy Kiwanis Club observed "National Wild Life Week in Canada‘" at the weekly luncheon at the Empire hotel on Monday. Dr. J. R. Giardine, president cf the Porcupine Rod and Gur Ciub was guest speaker, and his address on wild life and conservation was both intoresting and ‘effective. In introducing the guest speaker, Jsack Downey referred to the fact that Dw. Giardine had been actively enâ€" gaged in conservation work for many years, and now headed the Rod and Gun Club, an active organizacion reâ€" sponsible for much of the fine fishing and hunting enjoyed in this part of North. _ Kiwanian Downey gave the Rod and Gun Club much credit for the excelient work ‘done in receni years in stocking lakes and rivers April 10 to 16 had been set aside as "National Wild Life Week in Canada", D.
