She put carâ€" pets on the carpets. Then sheze put carpetas cn the carpets on the carpets. This sort of thing had gone on to such an extent on her staircase that they had become ramps with bumps. ¢ My next A4indlady lived on Birch Street North, in Timmirs, Ontario. She smelled all right but she was a lousy lyricist. She sang a lot, and had a good range and repertoire, but she got the words just enough conâ€" fused to bother you. She was more the insvirational, or spontaneous type of lvricist, working on hunches rather than mere facts. The result, though it fitted the music, was cnen to critâ€" icism. She‘d sing: : "Old Butterfly Sky I‘m keeping my eye balls on you," and then IT‘d start to worry about it. Her house smelled as if she wete operating a It had the appearâ€" ance of a house in ore of William Faulkner‘s novels where poor mounâ€" ta‘n whites had been inbreeding and cooking pork chovs for generations:. It woulin‘t have surprised me a bit to see an old sheep stagger out of a corner. Mrs. Trice would peer out of her cellar, where she dividéd her time beâ€" tween the sumv and the sink, scamâ€" pering along inside the pipes, looking like a bat out of hell and smelling of gin. She had cats the way otfher pecplé have mice. She never spoke out loud, but mumbled incessantly â€" hexes, I expect â€" and I always fearâ€" ed she was about to have an ectoâ€" plasm. My thatched hut, or hutched thatch was in the attic, arnd had a Gba kony with a stained glass leading to infinâ€" ity. Or hatched thutch. On the balâ€" cony was the commode. Mrs. Trice was very consciertious about the comâ€" mode, drawing water for it daily undâ€" er a voke. She wasn‘t conscientious about anythings else, though. Wher T1 set out for the bis city with my carpet â€"kag under my arm and my fFourlDuckle overshoes on my feet, Mother had some scund advice on the evlection of rooming houses, (Being a womar with a high moral ccde she r..n some adv.ce on various other topâ€" ies, but I won‘t go into that here», LCae suggested that 1 SMEI1, a house beâ€" lore taking uo) in it At Mrs. ‘Trice‘s, 207 Charles Btreet West, Toranto, I was so overcome with the stench I‘d ascepted the rocm, pald the deposit and was reeling along the sidewalk before I rea‘zed just what had transvired.
