W. J. Osborne Dempster, who won many distinctions for his work in the Intelligence Service during the war of 1914â€"1918, was the guest speaker at the weekly luncheon of the Kiwan‘s Club at the Empire hotel on Monday. His address on his experiences during the first world war were most intérestâ€" ing and gave many new lights on this important work. President G. N. Rcoss, in the chair, gave welcome to the visitors for the day and to the three new members, Nick Basciano, Art Moran and Lawâ€" rence Marriott. Announcement was made that the new msmbers would be formally reâ€" ceived:into the club on July 22, the cccasion of the visit of the Kiwanis Lieutenantâ€"Governor. The â€" meeting on the 22nd is to be an evening ons at the McIntyre Community Building, being a joint gathering with the South Porcupine Kiwanis Club. Through Kiwanian Nick Basciano, greetings to the club were received from a former member, Dr. P. Wenger, now at Fort William, Ont. Members Hear Of Work Of Intelligence Service Durâ€" ing First World War Capt. Osborne Dempster detailed the circumstances under which he had entered the Intelligence Service. Memâ€" bers of this service were known by many names, from undercover agent to spy, and even more objectionable terms. The speaker showed the necesâ€" sity for such service. One of his sentences was: "It is the duty of the secret service man to figure out what is going to and to block it." In the work, he said, no holds are barred. An Intelligence Service man can have no secruples or loyalties, exâ€" cept to the nation he serves. There is no narticular fame, and little money in the game, but it is essential work. full of danger, and it is one way to serve one‘s country in important way. Reference was also made by the speaker to the fact that it was often necessary for the Intelligence Service to do sabotage work, illustrations of this being given from his own experâ€" ience. In extending the thanks and appreâ€" ciation /of the club for the address, Kiwanian W. O. Langdon humorously suggested that Ottawa had been doâ€" ing sabotage work for the North in the past few days, and he asked the speakâ€" er if on under cover work in the North at present, to be sure to report on the absolute need for better roads here in all mining areas, and also the desirability of a new judicial district with headauarters at Timmins. Humorâ€" ous reference was also made to the possibility that one of the pQpular visitors might be an undercover man for a friendly nation. Capt. Dempster made very clear the difference between the Intellizgence Service, and the Gestapo and similar bodies. The latter were police for dealâ€" ing with the people at home, while the Intelligence Service worked in outâ€" side lands.. "In the Intelligence Service a man can only make one mistake," he said. "That is the end of his service, and often the end of him as well." Viceâ€"President O. R. Kennie read the report of the last meeting of the direcâ€" tors. The guest speaker was introduced by Viceâ€"President O. R. Kennie, who reâ€" ferred to the work of Capt. Dempstetr in the first world war, and the honors and distinctions he had won as a reâ€" sult. In Russia, Capt Dempster had been tried and quickly convicted and senâ€" erced to be shot. Later, the sentence was changed to life imprisonment, and after serving some months, he was eventually freed.
