She had been, it would seeem, A big star on the screen; Her roles had been ones ‘filled with passion ; She played a big part In HolHlywood art; But now she was taking in washin‘. He‘ll never forget The night that they met; He‘d just stopped to light his Havana But he laughted fit to die, As she winked her right eye, When she chanced to slip on a banana When she got to her feet, She said with some heat: "As sure as my name, isn‘t If I once made a start I‘d take you apart But T cannot forget I‘m a lady He often would say In his rough homely way, That he‘d be the big boss till he‘d die, But one day he fell When he met a young gel With a manâ€"taming look in her eye. But Dan couldn‘t wait, He soon made a date, And that night he took her out dancâ€" ing; | And it sure was a sight, For the rest of the night Wm. Morin, charged with the smashâ€" ing of a window in the door of the Emâ€" pire Bowling Alley, was given a remand for a week. Last week the case was adjoured to give the accused the chance to produce a witness to prove that it was another fellow who broke the glass. This witness was not present on Tuesâ€" day, and the accused was advised to have a summons issued for the witness, and the case was remanded until next week. He went out one night His mind set on fight, With hooch he was pretty near crazy A big six foot guy Took a poke at his eye, Now the six footer‘s pushing up daisies A man charged with wife beating suggested that he had taken a drink too many and this had caused his imâ€" proper use of force. The wife showed marks; on her throat where the accused had choked her. The husband was reâ€" quired to sign a bond to keep the peace for a year. And just such a man Was Rattlesnake Dan; A real desperardo was Daniel; He was three yardas around, Weighed three hundred pounds And had hair on his chest like a spanâ€" iel. Up here in the north ‘There are men who stand forth Like prunes on a boarding house table; fight for two pins, They don‘t care who wins And they‘ll stand up as long as they‘rc able. Lorne A. Coulis, a soldier on leave, entered a plea of guilty to a charge of careless driving. An officer from his unit was present and told the court that the young man was a very creâ€" ditable soldier and of good character and honesty. A fine of $25.00 and costs was imposed. Cmer Leblanc faied to appear to give evidence against Paul Clouthier in an assriult charge, and the case was consequently dismissed. A charge of careless driving against Dr. R. McKinney was dismissed. The charge was laid by Wm. Sandberg whose truck was involved in an accident with Dr. McKinney‘s car at a street interâ€" st>ection. It was brought out in the trial that after investigating the accident the police did not feel justified in layâ€" ing a charge. In his evidence Dr. Mcâ€" Kinney said that the truck driver could have avoided the accident. Both the truck and the car were badly damaged. In view of the contradictory evidence, the case was dismissed. er apartment, though her place some nonths ago had been declared public ad liquor cons>quently illegal there. he explained that the bottle in quesâ€" cion had been left there by her son while home on leave for the holiday from the Army. The magistrate imâ€" posed the minimum fine of $100 and costs in view of the cireumstances. Two other couples were charged with being "foundâ€"in." Only one of them was| asked to give evidence. She told about meeting Mrs. Geroux on street on New Year‘ Day, while she and her husband | and her father and mother were out for a walk. They had been neighbours of Mrs. Geroux last year and when she: invited them to her apartment they had no idea that they would run counter to the law. The invitation was simply a friendly one. The magistrate disâ€" missed the four charges, commenting that it did not appear to be a case of being ‘"foundâ€"in," but simply a friendly visit. Only a Few Cases and None of Them Important. Close to a Holiday Here This Week Police Court Had This week was a holiday week for police court here, there being mly a few cases and none of them important. One of them, "A Soldier‘s Prayer," is given elsewhere in this issue of The Advance. Another is contributed under the pen name of "Dixie Dan"‘ It refers to the writing of letters by soldiers. There have been many references in Canaâ€" dian newspapers to the duty that falls on those at home to write often and affectionately to the soldiers on serâ€" vice "Dixie Dan" urges the soldiers to write often and with affection to the folks at home. "To those who you love," ‘he says, "you should write love letters. Don‘t take it for granted that Mom and Pop know you love them. Do keep telling them cften how much you appreciate all they have done for you, the things they are sending to you, the prayers they are offering for you. Don‘t take for granted that your wife knows you love her just because you assured her personally. A wife rightly desires affection and it‘s a long time since you were alble to put your arms around her and whisper, "I love you dear,!" Give "With us," said the man. "Yes; I know," said the wife, ‘"but where will he sleep," "He‘ll sleep with us," the husband answered. "But think of the stink," responded the wife. ‘"Let him get used to it," was the casual reply. "IT â€"had to."‘ Of course there there are more setrâ€" "In a little Southern town a mob was fixing to lynch a man when a dig. nified old judge appeared. ‘"Don‘t," he pleaded, "put a blot on this fair comâ€" munity by nasty action." "The thing to do," he insisted, "is to give give the man a fair trial, Then lynch him." And they did, the rats!‘ e @iscouraged owner of a small coffee shop in Ohio gave up the ghost and placed a sign on the door:â€" "No coffee, no sugar, no tea, no help, no oil, no heat, no profit. If you want a square meal join the Army!" Who said thait?" "A man brought home a monkey, whereupon his wife immediately cried out, "But where will we keep him?" Little Newspaper Sh ow s that the Canadian Soldier Hasn‘t Lost his Morale or Humour. On Rattlesnake‘s feet she was prancing But Dan diun‘t mind And next thing we find To the altar she‘d led her dear Daniel And facts we won‘t gloss, For now she‘s the boss, And ‘he follows her round like a spaniel A friend of The Advance has loaned The Advance a copy of "The Red Patch," the little newspaper edited, printed and published by the First Canadian Division â€" Central Mediterâ€" ranean Porce. While the newspaper is printed in English, some oddities about it suggest that it was turned out in an Italian printing office. The paper itself gives its circulation as 4,000. "Men are only earthern jugs wit] spirits in them". TIllustrations of humour include:â€" "A Harlem butcher despairingly post ed a sign, "Leg of Nuttin.‘" "The discouraged owner of a smal That was ten years ago, And now let us go To look at it from a new angle; We stand, you and me, And what do we see? Why! It‘s Rattlesnake turning ithe mangle. In addition to news, regimental orâ€" ders, etc., the chief items in the solâ€" diers‘ newspaper are wit and humour One example of wit is the lineâ€" Yes, Rattlesnake‘s tamed, Tho‘ he can‘t be blamed, His misfortunes he‘ll just have to sufâ€" fer; The dame called his bluff: He thought he was tough. It just happened the lady was tougher. â€" Wilson Thomson, Timimins.
