Says Bond Was Not Stolen But Part of Poker Stakes Charge Withdrawn, but Bond. Belongs to Original At police court on Tuesday there was a charge of receiving stolen goods aâ€" gainst Eli Clairmont, but the charge was withdrawn. Mr. J. B. Lieberman, who appeared for the accused explained that his client had not knowingly reâ€" ceived stolen goods (in this case a Vicâ€" tory Bond) but that he had taken it in a poker game from another man who had lost $21.00 to him. The bond was not bought, but taken as security, and as soon as he had learned there was trouble about the bond, his client had refused to cash it at the bank. Crown Attorney Caldbick said. that there was every evidence to prove that the bond hgs been stolen from its rightâ€" ful ‘owner, but there was no evidence to connect the accused man with the theft, except the fact that he was in possession of the bond. The Crown Attorney added that the only reason the accused could have had for being suspicious about the ownership of the bond was the price which he paid for it. Their point, however, was covered by Mr. Lieberman‘s explanation that the bond was not bought for $21.00 but taken as security. The case was aCtâ€" cordingly withdrawn. Mr. Lieberman then asked if his client could dispose of the bond to get the money owed it, but the Crown Attorney said that the bond belonged to the original owner, and that now that it was established that it had been stolen, Mr. Clairmont would be liable if he tried to dispose of it. Mr. Dean Kester, K. C., appeared for Owner. Walter Bach, who faced two charges, one of receiving stolen goods (cigaretes taken from the A. P. Store) and the other of failing to observe the National Selective Service Mobilization Act regâ€" ulations. ‘The former charge was with= drawn, and on behalf of his client Mr. Kester entered a plea of guilty in the Mobilization Act case. Bach was senâ€" tenced to one day in jail, and then to be taken under escort to North Bay for Medical examination for the military. A charge of being in possession of stolen goods against Exhriam Bellair was remanded for a week. The article alleged to have been stolen was a radia=â€" tor cap. Th;;e was also a remand of a week in the theft charge against Bernard Gagnon, charged with the theft of a tweed suit and military discharge but=â€" Two men charged with disorderly conduct had the charges against them withdrawn. There were several UVAIC QijdigUo. One man paid $1.00 and costs for ilâ€" legally making a left turn. For failing to stop at a stop sign a fine of $1.00 and costs was imposed. Two charged with failure of having their tail lights on were each fined $1.00 and costs. On a similar charge another man who failâ€" ed to appear will be personally served with a summons. Two drunks were each fined $10.00 and cost# or ten days, one of them, a young lady taking the ten days. . A repeater on the drunk charge was fined $50.00 and costs for a second offence. He askâ€" ed for time to pay his fine, but the sentence had to stand. O. Junnila was remanded on a vagâ€" grancy charge. Recently when in court on other charges, Chief Gagnon was kind enough to secure work for the young man and the charges against him were dropped. He did not conâ€" tinue at the work secured for him, howâ€" ever, and so now faces the charge of vagrancy. First Degree Exemplified by Timmins Council K. of C.
