And at that point he decided to finish his novel, "How Green Was My Valley." R He had written the first draft of it in India. Now he started all over again, as a man without a job, on the benches of St. James‘ Park, London. It so happened that while Llewellyn was stubbing his reluctant pencil unâ€" der the trees of St. James‘, a London publisher by the name of Michael Joseph was having his photograph takâ€" en. Having first awed his subject as only photographers and dentists can, the photographer said to Mr. Joseph: "You‘re a publisher, and you ought to be interested in the discovery of an unknown genius. I know a young man â€"â€"â€"*"* At that familiar preamble, Mr. Joseph began to cringe. Nevertheless, holding his pleasant expression as well as he could, being still in the chair, he replied: "All right. Send him along" Mr Llewellyn came, with a few thouâ€" sand words of manuscript, and it did not take Mr Joseph long to make up his mind about it. He confessed that, hardened reader though he was, it more than once brought a lump to his thrcat. An agreement was signed, and the young author went off to Wales to work in earnest. For eighteen months he wrapped himself in silence, until Mr. Joseph began to wonder whether or not he would ever receive the finishâ€" ed manuscript. Finally, Llewellyn turnâ€" ed in the completed story, and the book was published a year ago last October., Sales of the book are well over a imilâ€" lion and a half; it has been translated into four languages: and has establishâ€" ed Richard Llewellyn as a firstâ€"rate novelist among contemporary fiction writers.
