Timmins To thank all for friendship during the past years, and to wish for one and all a Merry Christmas and a Glad New Ye Schumacher art here. An exhibit of paintings and water colours by Miss Helen Chisholm was one of the features of December of this year, the work winning very popular approval. Photography:â€"There are, perhaps, more cameras per capita in Timmins than in any similarâ€"sized town in the Dominion. Timâ€" mins has more than its share of very skilléd amateur photographâ€" ers, some of them here and in Schumacher and South Porcupine being so outstanding as to rank with the best professionals. Musical:â€"Citizens‘ Band. Lions Boys‘ Band, Gold Belt Band, McIintyre Concert Band, Pipe Band, Schubert Choral Society, Cornish and Welsh Choirs, firstâ€"class orchestras, music studios, dancing classes, etc. The Music Festival held at Timmins this year brought together notable array of talent, not only from Timmins,. but from a wide district including Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, South Porcupine and Schumacher, etc. Still more extended plans are being made for the event next year. The National Festival, presenting the music, costumes, customs, etc.. of the many nationalities that have helped to build this part of the North was a notable even in 1939. Last year, eleven National Groups entered the Festival. This year on account of war conditions the Festival was deferred, but will be resumed as soon as conditions warrant. Churches:â€"Irish Roman Catholic, French Roman Catholic, Italian Roman Catholic, United Church, Regular Baptist Church, Finnish United Church, Roumanian Orthodox, Christian Science, Presbyterian, Christian Brethren, Anglican, Greek Orthodox, Salvation Army, etc. Recreation:â€"Four modern talking picture theatres, with anâ€" other in course of erection; skating arena; curling rink; good atAhletic fields; golf course; badminton club; dance halls; large and modern and elegantly equipped bowling alleys; poolrooms; clay tennis courts; hockey; soccer; baseball; softball; bowling; rugby; lawn bowling; motor boating; canoeing; swimming; fishâ€" ing; hunting; ski club. Hotels:â€"Empire Hotel, largest in the North; many other wellâ€" equipped modern hotels. Ontario Government Liquor Store. Wine shop. All through the year, the Red Cross, the Women‘s Institute, The Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire, the Salvation Army Red Shield, the Legion, the Ladies‘ Auxiliary, and numerous others, in .Timmins and district have devoted hours, days, and weeks to work for the soldiers, sailors, and men of the Air Force, in knitting, sewing, making bandages, and sending parcels of foods and other necessities and special "treats‘‘ from home. The members of all service clubs in the district have done everyâ€" thing possible to help in the one thought that is uppermost in the minds of all Canadians, this war must be won. â€" At the Christâ€" mas season, each year, these clubs go beyond their normal capaâ€" city of work, and add to their quota with extra Christmas gifts to the men on active service, to former members, to relatives and friends, and to men of this district who miay be without other parcels. No one is forgotten, and each club coâ€"operates in the work. The Kinettes, besides their regular work for the sailors of the Thornwick Bay, sent these men twelve boxes of Christmas speâ€" cials, containing one hundred and twenty pounds of wearables and eatables. An example of what some of the clubs are doing this Christâ€" mas of 1941; is contained in the following lines. The Easy Aces Club held a dance and donated the proceeds to the sending of three hundred cigarettes to one hundred and ten men from this district now on active service. The Women‘s Institute, which regularly cares for the needs of the sailors on the ship "Gaspe," sent out twentyâ€"two extra parcels for the relatives and friends of members in service in Canada. Many other parcels were sent overseas, and on Friday the members packed further gifts for the sailors of the Gaspe. Climate:â€"Healthy and dry.
