His landlady averred that he set fire to bed and bed clothing deliberately. All witnesses were excluded from the courtroom during the hearing of eviâ€" dence. The proprietress of a boarding house at 124 Golden avenue testified that Mazik boarded with 30 others in her house. Some trouble over nonâ€" payment of his board bill which she said was "steady behind" led up to the present charge. She came back after being out to find the lock broken on her door and accused (who had been out when she locked the door) in her kitchen. He had stripped the table of crockery and thrown it in the garâ€" bage. Smoke led her to a bedroom where she discovered the fire smoulderâ€" ing. She put it out with water and called the police. Sergeant Douglas tesâ€" tified that he had responded, had been shown the burnt clothes and mattress. It was a clumsy attempt to set the house on fire and might have been caused by throwing a lighted cigarette on the bed. Defendant denied setting fire to the bed. Witnesses called failed to give conclusive evidence as to Mazik‘s guilt so his worship dismissed the case. A. Bonhomme charged with parking an unlighted truck on the travelled portion of highway in German townâ€" ship pleaded not guilty. A. Mason, driving a car with two witnesses in it on the evening in question, ran into the trusk, causing damage to his car â€"the rear end slewing round on the suippery road as he tried to avoid the truck.
