"The English do theseâ€"things so well l â€"don‘t they? That‘s why we made 1 our selection of 1941‘ spring. sports, clothes from some of the lovely tweeds and flannels that are coming. over from Britain. We worked with the British Consul in New York to get outfits fresh from the great designers over thereâ€" Chatelaine, the notedâ€" Canadian women‘s magazine, almost from the inception of the war, has beenâ€"contractâ€" ing a campaignâ€""Buy ~Britishâ€"Buy Canadian." Its chief? argument was that thisâ€"was one way of helping finâ€" ance and win the war. To that good argument it added another that buying British goods (including Canadian) was good business, good economy, beâ€" cause British goods had quality. The Fashion Numbér of Chatelaine is in itself a proof that Chatelaine now has a thirga convincing argumentâ€"that to buy British is to buy the smart, the modish, the fashionable. Writing in Chatelaine, under the heading;~‘"Fashion in Shorts," Carolyn Damon says: all their modes â€"and styles from New York ana Hollywood. As The Advance remarked at the time, this idea did not take proper account of the talent of ‘the Canadians themselves nor did it do justice to be people of London, England. London‘ is not down and out â€"â€"«dquite the contrary. Instead of beâ€" ing‘ defeated by the Hun bombings, the British have simply been spurred to greater seffort.©" ‘As for the Canadian designers, they have done. a â€"wonderâ€" ful job this spring. They have made it an assured fact that Canadian men and ~women still remain.among the Emartest dressed in <the world. < It: is apparent now that Canadian makes of wear for women have not been deâ€" pendent ‘on any outside ‘place for: the smart effects achieved but havebeen using the. outside sources simply for ideasâ€"ideas that are made into creaâ€" tions here. .This year, lacking some of this outside assistance, they are proving . beyond.. question that for smartness apdâ€" beauty ~â€"Canadian deâ€" signs will nOt only please the people here but will attack outsiders. You have read of the beautiful Cinâ€" derella and her wonderful glass slipâ€" pers? Well, the Cinderella, of fairy tales, had nothing on her modern sisâ€" ter of today‘s practical world, at least so far as glass footwear goes. Onge of the newest of the 1941 Spring styles is just thatâ€"a glass slipper. For beauty it has the oldâ€"time Cinderella species backed off the market, The new glass slipper has about everything to commend it. It is one of the modâ€" ern triumphs of the synthetic order. It is made of ground glass, It. has the outstanding advantages of the modern slipper with a few extra points thrown in for good measure. It is Paquin‘s gone to London: sinceâ€"the fall of Franceâ€"andâ€"you can see the famous deésigner‘s genius in this Welsh model= of petticoat ‘flannel.â€" Its design and fabric are taken right out of â€"hisâ€" clear and pliant and With all this, it is easy to obtain it in sizes and models that assure comfort and footâ€"ease. Most of the 1941 lytes of glass shoes are in cutâ€"ins and insets, like panels, and in decorations, like bows. This attractive window is hung with sheer net curtains finished L Lk (By Elizabeth McRae Boykin) We have a bone to pick with Damon Runyon for the sassy remarks he made in print recently about curtains. It seems ‘he theyx'e enemies of light and air and a‘ general nuisance. Tut tut, Mr. Runyon .. are a‘lot more necessary than your neckâ€" ties and collars, for Ainstance, not to mention the buttons on: your sleeves without which you‘d feel positively inâ€" decent. Provocative But before Befending curtains on the grounds of utility, we think we can make a case for them on the grounds ofâ€" beauty alone. Consider what winâ€" dows without curtains look likeâ€"you can see plenty of them in schools, hosâ€" pitals, offices .". . if you‘d like to live that way, gentle sir, we wash our hands of you. But we don‘t really beâ€" lieve you‘dâ€"like that cold stark effect anymore than do the rest of us. Curâ€" tains areâ€"or can beâ€"as graceful as a beautifully daraped gown and as flatâ€" tering, as provocative andâ€"wellâ€"As romantic if you can bear our bringing that up. Or they can have all that smooth ‘smartness of a suit. On the sideâ€" of usefulness, they were first thought,. of ~because they were Needed to keep out draughts, to protect against wintry blasts. With the advent of glass for window panes they were still important because they took the chill off the exposed glass surface. If you doubt that they‘re still useful for this purpose, try a winter in a room without curtains and see how dreary it will be for all your fancy central heating system. In the dayâ€" time, curtains soften â€"the glare, give privacy, yet they can be pushed back entirely when you want them back on dark days.> As for summer, curtains are often as useful for keeping the heat out in summer as for keeping it in in winterâ€"though there‘s no law against pushing them back if there‘s They‘re: Simple, Smart, Sopbisticat%d. â€"Pink and Green Flowered Fabrics are s Cc _ Tops. \ \ * i ' ‘E\ This is a pleasant window treatment that you can achieve yourself if you are handy with your sewing machine. The sheer curtains are white, the side overâ€"curtains are plain pink as is the valance which is scalloped and bound with deeper rose and has appliqued designs cut from a chintz used elsewhere Fashion Facts on Spring Curtains No, Mr. Runyon, we c don‘t ‘think /‘ you‘d really be happy without curtains, we don‘t think you‘d be happy at all. But maybe you‘d better try the idea . out just to get it out of your. system, Goodness, though, we hope nobody takes this for a blanket defense of all curtains. Plenty of them are probâ€" ably guilty. of Mr. Runyon‘s blackest | thoughts. Plenty of them‘are as out | of step with life today as bustles and' trains and hoops. Certainly it doesn‘t make sense today to hang as elaborate draperies as in the days of castles with stone walls and no glass in the winâ€" dows! Graceful and Reasonable The curtains we like and consider necessary and pleasant are. simple, graceful, reasonable and suited to the room they‘re used in. ~An overâ€"dressed window looksâ€"as bad, as an overâ€"dressed person;â€" an. underâ€"dresseq window is like: an underâ€"dressed ~person. The commonest eror most of us make in curtaining windows is to put up rufâ€" fled tieâ€"backs whether or not they:â€"are appropriate for the â€"room. . Another frequent mistake is to hang tooâ€"narâ€" row side draperiesâ€"it is never right to use a half width at a side. A full width or a full width and a half is essential . if you can‘t afford to use this much material it‘s far better to do without side draperies. " The same thing goes for glass curtainsâ€"be sure they‘re. very full, for skimpy curtains look . worse than none at all. Curtains should hang to the sill or to the floorâ€"never halfâ€"way between. Double sash curâ€" tains have been revived ~and are charming in informal rooms, a stray breeze you want to bask in. Rufflieg tieâ€"back curtains are. perâ€" fectly charming in the right <places. in the room. . _The dressing table has a skirt of pink sateen .with a valance like thit at the window. Thisâ€" valance is simple to achieve if you have the proper attachments for your sewing maching." The scallops are cut by tracing‘ dinner plates a.nd sauâ€" cers: alternating. l The style news in curtains this seaâ€" son centres upon the partiality ‘of the ‘decorations for fabrics with cabbage roses on white grounds. Many lovely new windows are draped lavishly with this particular type of fabric, reflectâ€" ‘ing the important new color favoriteâ€" pink with green. There are a good many Persian prints being used,, along ]with colonial document â€" prints and ‘ modernized traditional designs on pasâ€" ‘tel grounds. Cleverâ€" variations in |hanging, smart détails in valances, 'good hardware in glass and plastics as well as in metal, nice finishes in fringes, braids, cordsâ€"these distinâ€" .guish the more fashionable windows. | (Released by Consolidated News Feaâ€" But many rooms call for straight hung tailored ‘curtains: < Often a~ valance across the top is more appropriate and atractive: than sideâ€"drapesâ€"this may be ruffled pleated draped, scalloped, or it may be more of a cornice covered with wall paper ‘or â€"mirror.â€"â€"Sheer_ side draperies of . contrasting color are sometimes.very effective. ~If you use side draperies of chintsz, sateen, creâ€" tonne, taffeta, damask, velvet, satin or any such conventional fabrics, they almost always should be lined and sometimes interlined. Keep in ~mind that the making of a drapery is a tailâ€" oring ‘job demanding great precision,, perfect fit and workmanship. For such a little suit lives a long, long time looking > fresh â€" and new, when you join it up with a crisp young blouse or : handâ€"knit â€" sweater, tures Incorporated). And lucky you, comfort is a must in all spring shoes. The trend. toward low heels, the moccasin rage and the new baby shoe, all mean that you can have your cake and eat it too. New walled lasts make the shoes look less stiff and allow room for all 10 toes into the bargain. (By Virginia Pope) For once in a liféetime of. clethesâ€" buying, the old adage of "start from the bottom and ~work up" has some truth in it. $ Usually you get your new spring suit firstâ€"â€"or your new bonnetâ€"angq then look to your feet and buy shoes. This spring, however, the new shoes are so smart, so comfortable and so clever that you may well work your way upwards and get your shoes first. Two new shoe colorsâ€"red and beige â€"aAare certainly distracting enough to throw you off your beaten path to the hat department. You‘ll find all variâ€" eties on the red themeâ€"tomato, orâ€" ange, maroon and scarlet. You needn‘t worry about â€"finding things to match The manuâ€" facturers are a jump ahead of you and have matchâ€"mated their accesâ€" sories. For ‘plain everyday use you may prefer beige ~which. goes with everything. And if you‘re of a pracâ€" tical and conservative nature, you may stick to navy. Nor has prettiness been sacrificed. The cute little pumps are cuter than ever, with samall bows to perk them up. These bows, scallops, perforations and ornaments all contrive to make your foot look smaller and more attractive. Hose Are Important In line with this spotlight on shoes â€"and with skirts shorter than last yearâ€"there‘s more need than ever to beautify your legs. Happlily, skirts are still below the 1927â€"28 line. But they are short enough to put your legs on display. _ 1 oA se rup Colours Featured in Shoes This Year Reptile in Fashion For fabrics, reptile has come into fashion tanned to a new softness and shading in color from an orange brown to a pale tan. OFTEN.â€"IMITAT ED BUT NEVER DUPLICATED Calls For Exercise Now, for what you can do to make your legs more beautiful. First, a deâ€" pilatory is called for to make the legs look slimmer and nicer. Dieting will take weight off your legs, but it‘s a long slow process and often a temper«â€"« wearing one. Exercise is quicker, if more rigor« ous. Squatting exercises are particuâ€" larly effective. If you can do that Rusâ€" sian dance step where you squat down and stretch first one leg and then the other, you‘re lucky, for that‘s one exâ€" ercise which will whittle down your calves in short order. An easier exercise is one where you grasp the bedpost in one hand and swing the opposite leg in as wide an arc as possible. Jumping rope is exâ€" cellent for the ankles, and good fun besides.. Walking and swimming are also good leg exercises. Once a week we suggest that you massage your legs with all the care you give to your face, working upward from the ankles and kneading the calves.
