So far as Canada is concerned there is, and Santa is called the Gold Mining Industry. Instead of fading away in this hard world of evil and unbelief, this Santa Claus grows bigger and broader and jollier. And the Porcupine Santa Claus is the noblest of them all. In the last five years there have been ten new gold producers added to the Porcupine listâ€"Pamour, Hallnor, Preston East Dome, Aunor, Delnite, De Santis, Naybob, Broulan, Moneta and Faymar. These ten new producers have a capacity of 4,250 tons a day and add about $13,000,000 a year to the production of gold in the Porcupine. Still better, the original mines continue their oldâ€"time large proâ€" ductionâ€"in some cases increasing it as the needs seemed to reâ€" quire. Editorial Do the adults really realize what the war means to the younger generation? To some it means the separation from a father or an older brother. To others it means the sickening terror that rises in their hearts as they listen to the radio or watch the newsâ€" reel at the movies. For we, with modern radios and theatres, are able to see and hear more of the tragedy of war. For this reaâ€" son we want to help and help in every way we can. The most pleasing feature of all this is that not only has proâ€" duction been continuous, but it has been progressive in the amount of output. Looking back on the production for the thirtyâ€"one years, it would seem as if the mining of gold in the Porcupine had been tempered to the national need. It is adâ€" mitted by all that during the last war gold mining was Of vital assistance in financing the war and keeping Canada on even keel during the trying days. Porcupine‘s part in that good work is so evident that it needs no emphasis. Again during the recent depression, gold mining, and particularly the active mines of the Porcupine bearing so large a proportion to the total gold output of Canada, materially helped Canada‘s stability and assisted the country through the tests of depressed days. Now, once more, in these days of war, gold mining is taking a notable part in supâ€" porting Canada‘s place in the world of nations. Not only is the immense value to the nation at large of large production of gold to be considered, but there is the other beneficial and stabilizing feature to be consideredâ€"the tens of thousands given employâ€" ment at high wages during time of stress. Accordingly, it is not out of place to say that gold mining has been a very helpful sort of Santa Claus to Canada in days of need, and that Porcupine has played Santa Claus to Ontario, to Canada and to the Empire in the times of trial. The following is the leading editorial in "Tisdale Talent," the school paper issued by the pupils of South Porcupine Public School. It was written by Nadyne Smith, the talented young editor of the paper:â€"â€" Children are collecting magazines and are buying War Savings Stamps. <~The latter is being carried on either through the home or the school. This means a sacrifice of a movie or an afterâ€" noon‘s skating. Active tinsel gatherers, when they found no place to deposit their goods, were greatly disappointed. It may surprise many to know that the Porecupine camp has just completed its thirtyâ€"first year of continuous production of gold. During that period of time some $650,000,000 in gold has been shipped from the district, and over $185,000,0000 has been paid out in dividends. Children are taking a great part in the welcoming of war guests to this new strange country. These are only a few of the many little tasks completed by children and we stand ready to do what we can for the British Empire. We realize how good it is to have the Union Jack wayâ€" ing majestically over our country, Canada, which is part of the British Commonwealth of Nations. At this and all times, we, as children of toâ€"day, are proud to be true British Citizens and are prepared to do our part. God Save Our King. Active tinsel gatherers, when they found no place to deposit their goods, were greatly disappointed. A while ago, a plea for washcloths was answered by children. Soon, a quilt will go to the Red Cross from two senior classes of the Public School. THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TTIMMINS, ONTARIO "God comfort those who suffer in this war," the parson prayed. The sun shone in through coloured glass; vibrant, the organ played. Deep in my foolish heart I asked, "How much does God take heed? Thousands of hearts are broken and a million people bleed!" And as I sat remembering only such things as theseâ€" The victims of the devil‘s work were rescued from the seas; A thousand nurses stooped to ease a thousand soldiers‘ pain; A hundred Spitfire pilots rose to clear the skies again, Many a foster mother kissed some little orphaned child; Smokeâ€"blackened firemen fought huge fires with spirits undefiled ; Ten million willing, outstretched hands fed homeless, hungry death, Binding up hurts, speaking kind words, restoring failing breath "Oh thou of little faith," He said, | And humbled. deep I bowed my head folk :; A tired crowd underground laughed at a wounded actor‘s joke; White helmeted young doctors braved a screaming shower of Porcupine is playing Santa Claus Gold in the Heart of the North Loyal Children Help in War Porcupine Plays Santa Claus Men of the Northland, rugged, free! Cold and unfeeiling, sometimes known! What lies beneath this outward form Of such indifference daily shown? Hard as rock, or steel, they say! But who are they, the questions ask? Do they really know or only guess What lies beneath this outward mask? Symbolic of the land they loveâ€" The work that is their livelihoodâ€" To dig and drill the hardest rock. Surely they‘re not misunderstood! These men a task before them have With cheer and fortitude to faceâ€" Each a benefactor to his raceâ€" Helping his Country keep its place. Beneath the soft white banks of snow That winter brings to this Northland, The surface gravel, sand and soil, Down. down. they go, as nature planned To find a hidden treasure stored Deep in the solid rock‘s embrace. These daring men and brave are found Among the worthiest of our race. Beneath the ground, the rock so hard That only by a blast is piled, In the very heart of which is found The purest gold, gold undefiled! Men of the North, what do we find Beneath their outer surface mold? Something that perhaps was missedaâ€" Friendly souls with hearts of gold.
