Cumâ€" _mings came to "Charlie McCarthy, Deâ€" tective" after finishing a fourâ€"week stint with Sonja Henie at 20th Cenâ€" turyâ€"Fox studios where he put in a month learning to skate and doing comedy skating routines. MHe was bit tired and bruised after his experiences. Hinds, Ray Turner and producerâ€" director, Prank Tuttle. "Charlie McCarthy, Detective," is the first picture in which Charlie has had the title role all to himself. In his ' first, "Goldwyn Follies", his efforts were |confined to specialties and bits. He | advanced a step in "Letter of Introâ€" | duction," playing a supporting role with | Andrea Leeds, Adolphs Menjou and George Murphy, while in "You Can‘t Cheat an Honest Man" he shared the ;billing honours with his mortal enemy, | W. Spouner rmade some humorous references to plans that might be made to improve the flavour of the town water. He touched on the idea that the drinking water might be flavoured with different materials so that one day it would taste like Scotch whisky, anothed day like gin and a third day like rye, and so on. As one fireman whispered, as Councillor Spooner outlined his humorous proâ€" gramine. "It‘s too good to be true!" But last week the people of East Joliet, Tlinois, found that such things actually happened. When they turned on their water taps keer ran out. Some called City Commissioner Joseph F. Whalen, to complain, the Associated Press desâ€" patches said. Others said it was great. One man suggested it would be all right if the stuff could be made a little stronger. But there wasn‘t any doubt about it being beer. The City Comâ€" missioner said that a brewery vat had overflowed into the water system and made the water taste strongly of beer. Anyway there will be people here who hope now that Councillor Spconer was not just joking, but that he will go right on to perfect his system of Scotch, gin and rye in the water on different days. The Advance will be pleased to announce the different flavours for the difféerent days, for the benefit of those who prefer Scotch to gin or ryse, or rye to gin or Scotch, or gin to anyâ€" thing else. Tuttle Blairmore Enterprise:â€"The doctor put a thermemeter in the sweet young thing‘s mouth. Then she said: "Thank you. Have you a match?" "Frank," he said. ‘"Let‘s rewrite the script.
