In company with another ‘teenâ€"aged lad, Eugene Leblanc, he was ambushed by prison guards after freedom lasting nearly a day. A posse of provincial pcelice had scoured the heavily wooded district near the prison for the two. Gabriel was shot once through the left shoulder and lung. Doctors said he "had a chance to live." When captlured, the two were dressâ€" ed in civilian clothing, believed to have been picked out of a Guelph backyard. Returning to his home, Culp informâ€" ed prison authoritiee who surrounded the district. When guards saw them apprcaching along the railway they orâ€" dered the two to halt. Leblane halted but Gabriel tried to make for the bush and was fired upon. Gabriel was sentenced at Kirkland Lake by Magistrate Atkinson on May 5 for theft. He had ibeen paroled only the December previous after serving for a like offence.
