Wednesday, September 1, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C5 FA LL IN S T R U C T IO N /B A C K T O S C H O O L Proud to provide their services to you! ADVERTISING FEATURE Schlegel's Gymnastics Centre Inc. opened the doors for operation a little more than a year ago with the focus of providing recre ation programs to the Oakville area. "We expected that Elfi's (Schlegel) accomplish ments as an international competitor and ambassador of Canada in the sport of gym nastics would be a valuable asset in drawing people to our facility," says Chris Goold, director and co-owner of Schlegel's. "But we also understood that the secret to keeping people and to grow our membership was going to be dependent on the quality of our programs, facility and coaching staff." The development of the programs has been a group effort by all the co-owners and directors of Schlegel's (Sisters Elfi, Andrea and Chris, as well as long-time friend Betty Tate-Pineau). "Having been involved in artis tic and rhythmic gymnastics from the grass roots level right up to competing at the inter national level, who is better qualified to develop and run a gymnastics centre?" states Andrea. Andrea, in addition to her many competitive achievements, is a nationally cer tified coach for Artistic Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics and Trampoline, as well as holding a Masters Degree in Elementary Education. As the program director, Andrea is responsible for the daily lesson plans, as well as long-term planning for the gym. "I put a lot of time into the development of our lesson plans and the selection of complementary equipment to ensure that every child, regard less of their ability, can be challenged and enjoy the benefits that participating in gym nastics has to offer." J u s t fo r k id s One of the gym's unique features is the specialized apparatus called 'Just For Kids' which has been specially designed to accom modate the recreational gymnast. In a Today's Parent article (April 1999), accord ing to Cathy Haines, coaching development coordinator for Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique, "Gymnastics equipment should be scaled down to suit the age and size of the child." Competitive size equipment not only intimidates recre ational gymnasts, it increases the risk of injury. Overall, Schlegel's Gymnastics Centre has been set-up to be anything but overwhelming. The intimate atmosphere is clean and colourful and provides for a comfort able learning environment. The same care taken in the selection of equipment was equally applied when assem bling the mature and qualified coaching staff at Schlegel's. All the coaches at Schlegel's Gymnastics Centre are Nationally qualified and attend regular in-house coaching work shops, led by Betty Tate-Pineau. As a course conductor for the National Coaching Certification Program, Betty qualifies coach es across the province. She is recognized as one of the top conductors, and her services are in high demand. "Of course, my priority is to our team at Schlegel's. C o m m itm e n t key to s u c c e s s "However, one of the reasons that I enjoy conducting courses is because I am able to meet and exchange ideas with so many coaches. I know that we have the top team of recreational coaches in the country and that we are the envy of many organizations." Members of our coaching team, in addition to the directors include - Leanne McNeil, Joanne Indovina, Courtney Dykes, Theresa Davies-Blake, Fiona Van Wissen, Elisa Kim, Jennie Robertson, and Linda Bagworth. We are very grateful for their dedication and out standing service." Most importantly, the coaching staff at Schlegel's love kids! Director, Chris Goold, provides a valuable perspective to the group having been an ath lete, coach, and now mother of kindergym kids. "Having three children of my own, I know and understand the concerns and expectations that many parents share when they place their children in the care of an instructor at a gym. They want to know that their children are going to be safe, that they will be kept active, that they will leam and develop skills but, perhaps, most importantly N they are HAPPY." The commitment to recreational gymnas tics by all the directors and coaches at Schlegel's has been the operations key to suc cess. Even Elfi, who is prepar ing to cover the Sydney Olympic Games as the gymnastics expert for NBC, maintains a very busy coaching sched ule. "A lot of people were very surprised that when we opened the gym that we decided to provide a recreational program only. The decision to concentrate on recreation al gymnastics was really based on our per ception that instructional programs for this segment had long been ignored by clubs who were more focused on developing facilities and coaching resources to support the more recognizable achievements of the competitive program. Schlegel's is committed to the sup port of gymnastics at the grassroots level. This is where we can be of greatest service to the community; this is where we can best serve the sport." Thank you, Oakville, for making our first year truly a special experience. The Schlegel's Gymnastics Centre is cele brating its one year anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 11th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come and join in the festivities, meet the team, and to eat some cake. We look forward to meeting all of our visitors. Q j L ooking fo r a w a y to ^ apply your sk ills and enthusiasm to help our community?
