Wednesday, ^epiemoer 1, lyyy THE OAKVILLt t>i_- 01 Photos by Peter C. McCusker ' ^ O H N O : the U-19 Oakville \ ym' 0* W V 'double overtime heartbreaker Blazers lost a 3-2 to Richmond Hill Raiders in Ontario Cup semifinal action at 'Sherwood Forest Park in Burlington this past weekend. Oakville fought back from a 2-0 deficit (the right photo was taken after Oakville evened it up at 2-2). Oakville almost went ahead but the Richmond Hill goaltender made this great save ̂(left photo) off an Oakville corner kick. 1 . "Richmond Hill went on to the score the winner. White grew up track-side watching his father compete (Continued from page B8) both on the podium, in the top three positions." His weekend victory "made up for a lot of bad luck" but it doesn't erase all the disappointments, said Matt. "It definitely helps even just mentally going into the next race," he added. Matt's victory was especially sweet in his rookie year on the circuit: 'The majority of people never get a win period," said Matt's very proud father David, himself a former Formula Ford Canadian Champ and his son's most ardent fan. "I went delirious," said David who ran from one section of the track to the podium to capture his son's most thrilling moment on video. "It's been really frustrating (for Matt). The kid really deserved it. He soldiered on. The lows are so low. But he raced an unbelievably smart race. You have to have patience and that's one of the things he did Sunday. He waited for the last four laps and then put the pressure on." Matt grew up track-side watching his father compete, first in stock endurance racing, and something rubbed off: "I like the speed. I've always loved cars." Father and son began with go-carts: "From the very beginning, there was something there," added David. "I encouraged him but he didn't need much." Cup semis The Oakville Soccer Club saw three o f its four girls teams advance to the Ontario Cup championship later this month, following semi final action this past weekend. The only team not to advance was the U-19 Oakville Blazers (see adjacent cutline). Advancing were the U-13 Oakville Cobras, who won 2-1 (in overtime penalty kicks) over Niagara Falls Lightning; the U-14 Oakville Angels, who won 3-1 over Sudbury Canadians; and the U-15 Oakville Strikers who won 4-0 over North York Cosmos. The Ontario Cup runs over two September weekends, Sept. 11/12 & 18/19th. See Friday's Beaver for complete schedule. Have you seen the GREENS at DEERFIELD late ly ... OAKVILLE 9 0 5 -8 4 7 -5 5 5 5 Matt then attended the Bridgestone Racing School in Shannonville where he was an "outstanding third out of 40- some competi tors," said David, and followed that with time spent on the Formula 2000 circuit. "It was a good learning curve to get used to the cars and racing wheel to wheel." Enter Peter Christianson, president of Young Driver's of Canada, and now Matt's major sponsor. "I could only do so much (financially)," said David, direc tor of public rela tions for Young Drivers. "He has such determina tion and focus. As a teenager, racing is not what kids want to do in their spare time. Matt is a very sociable person but racing comes first." David once dreamed of being a pro driver and won a scholar ship to race in Europe in his mid 30's "but I was too old," he said. Matt said that invaluable expe rience is helping to guide him "through the lad der of racing." He attends every race and steps in only when necessary. "I've been down this route before," said David. "I know the pitfalls. It's a good partnership. I want him to be able to go as far as he wants to go-" As his son's interest in racing flourished, his own racing desire waned. "I want to focus on him. I want to support Matt. My job is to help him get the best piece of machinery so he has the opportu nity to show his skill." Matt's plan is to race one more Formula Ford season and then consider his options which are switching to Formula Atlantic or the Indy Lite Series. 1 99 9 TOYOTA PASE0 1 994 GEO TRACKER 4 X 4 ,5-speed, soft & hard top, great deal, dean car, green in colour. 3 9 3 O A K V IL L E 1 4 5 0 9 P E E R S ROAD, O A K V IL L E * 827-1177 2-dooc, 5-speed, air conditioning, sunroof, block in colour.
