Limited-production, high performance sport vehicles, handmade by world-class engineers. Cars of such precision and detail that they can almost be called automotive works of art. The Ford special Vehicle Team engineers and builds such gems, but finding them for sale can be tricky. And finding some where to have them carefully serviced, if you're lucky enough to acquire one, is another matter. In the Oakville area, there's only one place you can do both. For three years now, Kennedy Ford has been the only dealership in town certified to sell and service these exclusive Ford SVT (special vehicle team) products. Of the 577 Ford dealers in Canada, there are only 25 that are authorized to do so. They specialize in three SVT products: The SVT Contour, The Mustang Cobra, and The F I50 Lightning. Kennedy Ford's designation is a significant achievement. Many Ford dealerships apply, but only a handful across Canada are awarded SVT certi fication. According to Kennedy Ford president, Malcolm Nourse, it really }>oils down to a dealer's good track record: sales leadership, a long-term commitment to sales and service train ing, and a proven ability to maintain |ind support specialty inventory. * "But excellent customer satisfac- * <ion is, above all other things, what fcord weighs most heavily," says bourse. "Luckily for us at Kennedy Ford, that's been our secret to success since we opened our doors in 1962. - Dealerships, like Kennedy Ford, ivhich meet the initial SVT designa- lion criteria are required to send one fepresentative on an annual training Photo by Peter McCusker J. David Nourse and Linda Piotrowski, of Kennedy Ford, 280 South Service Rd., invite customers to view the Ford Mustang Cobra, one of three Ford SVT (special vehicle team) products available at the Oakville car dealership. Last year's seminar was hosted in San Antonio, Texas. And though only one Kennedy Ford staff member made the trip to San Antonio, every member of the sales and service team was obliged to complete an intensive, in-dealership SVT training session. The training focused on mechanical/engineering issues, driveability, SVT features, environmental factors and customer service issues, if the designation is to be upheld. "Getting the designation was no piece of cake -- and we have to work hard each year just to keep it," says Nourse. "Ford expects us to maintain leadership in customer and sales satis faction and to endorse the SVT name at every contact point we have with the customer. It's been a whole new ball game, and it's really raised the level of attention and care that the customer receives from us at every stage of the sales and service experience." But despite the impressive cross staff SVT service skills at Kennedy Ford, 95% of Kennedy Ford's SVT servicing is handled by one assigned SVT technician. His name is Floyd Ellwood, a Class "A" mechanic and a one-of-a-kind specialty car guru. If you're looking for information or ser vice on a SVT vehicle, Floyd's the one to call. And for those of you lucky enough to secure a very rare SVT test drive, you can be sure that Floyd will be at your side every kilometre of the way. And what kind of specialty vehicle inventory does Floyd have in store for you? Simply put, a limited one. Kennedy Ford received a total of only 25 of these specialty vehicles in 1999. But this is not untypical for a SVT dealership if you remember that these cars are in limited production. Although Kennedy Ford special izes in three SVT products -- the Contour, The Mustang Cobra, and the F I50 Lightning -- today, only one Lightning remains in the showroom. A new inventory is expected in early 2000, but model details have not yet been disclosed. "Working on these vehicles gives me a tremendous sense of pride and responsibility," says Ellwood. "But as everyone at the dealership knows, spe cialized vehicle mechanics is just one small part of what we do. It's in high level customer care and personal ser vice that we're really expected to excel -- and sometimes that can be an even greater and more rewarding chal lenge."
