It is estimated by the Chief Officer of Health that at any one time in Onâ€" tario there are approximately 700,000 chikiren under ten years of age, 65,000 additional children becoming eligible for toxoid each year. During the last| ten years, 442.000 children have been given toxoid. It is estimated by the Department of Health that not one--l From 1931 to 1936, the number of cases in Ontario was reduced from 2.368 to 290. But in spite of the good showâ€" irg in Toronto and other cities in 1937. the total incidence increased to 506 cases. The meortality rate was increasâ€" ed to an even greater extent, there beâ€" ing 29 deaths in Ontario as agzrinst 8 the year before. Contrasted with this, however; is the record of small centres and rural comâ€" munitics where there has been no toxâ€" cid administration and other municiâ€" palities where a diphtheria prevention programme hnas been limited to the giving of toxoid for one year only. In 275 municipalities which continue toxoid campaigns every year, the inâ€" cidence of the disease has been markâ€" edly reduced. In 1937, a number of cities had not reported ~a sirgle death from diphâ€" theria. Among these was Toronto, which again set up a remarkable reâ€" cord for a city so large. The survey showed that in the largâ€" er cities of Canada there had been a decided decrease in the incidence and death rate from diphtheria. The single exception had been the only city where texoiding of children had not been general Toronto, Feb. 17.â€"Following the diphtheria survey made last year by the Health League of Canada, figures for 1937 recently compiled by the Onâ€" tario Department of Health comprise warning against any letâ€"down in preventive measures.
