It‘s sleeker than it was, folâ€" lowing the evolution of uphoilstery fabrics from the shaggy and homespun surfaces to the more suave finishes. So when you buy a plainâ€"effect rug or carâ€" pet with texture weave to assure better service, you‘ll probably pick something that looks more like a perfectly plain carpet than anything else. Examinaâ€" tion will show that the weave is a frieze or some other subtle variation of a novelty texture. Maybe it will be a serge or a herringbone weave; maybe a chenille tufted broadloom; maybe a damask effect or one of the more eleâ€" gant new textures that give the effect and rosy reds, the siate, gunâ€"meilal and light grays, the wood tones. Next to the light colours of the new rugs, the return of the ?7â€"inch carpet is probably the most important news. The vogue for figuredâ€"toâ€"theâ€"baseboard carpeting is largely responsible, and these designs range all the way from French flowerlets to Victorian cabbage roses, from rather formal Empire medallions to allâ€"over scroll motifs, from conventional hooked designs to very lovely subtle leaf and plume patâ€" terns. It seems to me to be inconsistent that there is no inspection of fire hazards in settlers‘ homes, especially when there is a trainâ€" ed fireâ€"fighting organization available to make such inspection with no addiâ€" tional cost to the settler or to the pubâ€" lic¢." After an investigation at Hearst Chief Coroner Tucker issued the folâ€" lowing statement: "Owing to the fact that witnesses are still confined to the hospital at Hearst suffering from burns and exâ€" posure, I am unable to state at the preâ€" sent stage whether or not an inquest will be held. "This fire in which one person lost his life, was apparently caused by the stove being placed too close to a parâ€" tition covered with building paper, which became ignited and caused the fire. On Tuesday of this week the local fire chief came to my home which is equipped with the best brick chimney and other fireproof equipment that I can obtain, prepared to make me carry out any necessary changes to ensure safety from fire in my home and the lives of my family. When their home at Coppell, south of Hearst, was destroyed by fire Tuesâ€" day night this week, the twoâ€"yearâ€"old son gf a northern settler, Fred Payeur, was trapped and perished in the flames, while the mother with her sixâ€" yearâ€"old daughter and sevenâ€"monthsâ€" old baby son are all in St. Paul‘s hosâ€" pital, Hearst, in a serious condition from burns received. "As a result of several investigations due to similar fatal fires, this matter has been drawn to the attention of the proper authorities and I am again doâ€" ing so in this case."I am hopeful that necessary regulations which, in my opinion, will result in a large saving of human life, will be put into effect," said the chief coroner. Cochrane, Dec. 16. investigationr of a fire at Coppell, south of Hearst, in which a twoâ€"yearâ€"old ch#@d was burned to death, Chief Corâ€" cner E. R. Tucker strongly urged inâ€" spection of settlers‘ homes throughout the North. Inspection Is Again Urged of All Cabins Less Expensive Among the rugs of good styling that sell for a reasonable price (around $50) we noted an allâ€"over fern leaf design in mellow colourings; a sweet old floral sampler pattern; an oysterâ€"white Trug with a simple diamond design; a misty mossy design inspired by an antique rug of early Louisiana heritage; a rug design taken from a piece of old Swedâ€" ish embroidery in sea beach shades and ccean heather. In this same category are a group of ensembled rugs, a plain effect frieze weave in a colour that is ensembled with the predominant shade of a figured rug. The two are suggested for adjoining rooms where harmony rather than repetition is desired. (Copyright 1937, by Elizabeth Macâ€" Rae Bovkin.) It is generally believed. as suggest?d by Pornomarenko‘s counâ€" sel that Victor Gray may have fired the actual shots that resulted in the police sergeant‘s death, but hat Porâ€" nomarenko was his companion at the time. There was very determined and extensive search for the two men and eventually they were rourded up and surrounded.. They made an apparent attempt to shoot their way out of the police ambush. Gray was shot dead in the battle, but Pornomarenkco, who was seriously wounded, surrendered to the police. After his recovery he was tried for the murder of the police serâ€" geant and sentenced to death. The apâ€" peal having failed, the only chance for Pornomarenko to escape death by hanging is through the exercise of exeâ€" cution clemency. In view of the genâ€" eral attitude of the law it is difficult to see in this case why any executive clemency should be expectea. (by J. W.
