Strain Passes _ in His 86th Year ville was the rendezvous, and there he built them a home, which later, in the 1911 fire was burned up. Strangely enough that fire occurred exactly twenâ€" tyâ€"six years ago today, July 1l1thâ€"a day never to be forgotten by his chilâ€" dren. COne boy was drowned in the ilake and in the holocaust, and for ‘lhOUI‘S the father dragged the lake with others for the boy‘s body which was not found for five days later. Added to this was the fact that Bert, an older son, was out in McArthur township prospecting, and at the time of the fire it was not known whether he, too, had lost his life. For a week the susâ€" | pense was prolonged, when after all he managed to get in and prove his safety. After the fire the ljate Mr. Strain came across the lake and settled in Ssouth Porcupine. . While recording claims, and prospecting for others, and waiting for the time when they would tring him wealth he pursued his trade as mason. His handiwork still exists. He bricked in the boilers for the Holâ€" linger the Vipond, the Coniaurum, the l Mclintyre. With the strange trick that fortune scme times plays us, he lost out on an opportunity which offered. He loved to (Continued From Page One) the body was taken to its last resting place in the Tisdale cemetery. The fRremen in uniform attended as pallâ€" bearers, a mark of respect that the brigade give to most oldâ€"timers here. They were Max Smith, W. G. Skinner, R. Quesnel, W. Thompson, E. Bowes, C. Bespalko. His daughters Edna (Mrs. Miller) and Eva (Mrs. Ewing) were the only children present. rs, Rody is the only other surviving daughter, in Sasâ€" katchewan. Thirteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Strain but of them only these three survive. He leaves 18 grandchildren and twelve greatâ€"grandchildren. He was born 85 years ago in "Muddy York" (since Toronto) and came from there to Flesherton where he learned the trade of brick and stone mason. It was at Flesherton that he married his wife. Together they came north to Thessalon where most of his children were born. He was reeve of Thessalon and served on the council there for years. At the age of 60, when other men were thinking of retiring, his pioneer spirit asserted itself. He came north to the Porcupine, when the gold strike made this place known to the world. He brought his family in on the trail from Kelso, with furniture, and the first piano to come to the camp. Pottsâ€" With the strange trick that fortune scme times plays us, he lost out on an opportunity which offered. He loved to tell that the McIntyre offered him stock instead of money for his work. He reâ€" fused it. Had he accepted, he might have died a far wealthier man. But once did the god of luck smile on him. He sold some claims four or five years ago to a company, and received one substantial payment for them. Someâ€" thing happened to the company and his dreams did not materialize. With the optimism of the true prospector he hoped to the last for the time to come when he would receive the reward for his labours. â€"And. possibly, now the time has come!
