The lad, she said, would not help her with the chores which included the tending of two cows: he would not obey her in anything. "The magistrate undertook to give the lad some good advice and wound up by saying that if he gave his mother cause to complain again he would be sent to a reformatory. The boy seemed quite impressed and for some time there was no, further trouble with him. "One day the boy went to the mines adetective, an â€" unofficial policeman whose job it was to guard against high grading and such misdemeanors. He told the detective that some men had been hiding ore undernsath the floor boards of his mother‘s stable. Acting on this redâ€"hot tip the detectiye, with an assistant, went to the house with a search warrant. The widow was inâ€" dignant and frightened but the search had to be made. South Porcupine, Ont.., Oct. 31st. 10936. Special to The Advance. Once more a time of fun, frolie and dancing, this latest Hallowe‘en dance of the South Porcupine Fire Brigade has proved a huge success.. Visitors from all parts of the camp were preâ€" sent. The floor was with dancers in costume and dancers out of costume, all there for one purposeâ€" to have a good time; and judging by the merriment, good humour, and high spirits of everyoneâ€"a good time was | had. These dances are always typical of the spirit of the North. It: seems that the disguising of the personality even if it only be by a false nose, turns on the conviviality and the spirit of fun which is infectious. It is practically impossible to describe all the costumes there: some wearers we knew, and soms» we didn‘t. Without doubt some of the quaintest and prettiest costumes South Porcupine has seen, worn by some of the prettiest girls, were on the floor last night. The fancy dress prize winner was Miss Marjorie Jamieson, who was | a Deautiful picture in an 1850 costume â€"Crinoline large pink bonnet and deâ€" tails exact. The prizes were handsd out by Mr. W. Scott, fire marshal of Ontario, who was a guest of the fireâ€" men for the occasion. Miss Pat Gurritty, as a jockey, won the prize for the mos! original costume. She was aided in the grand march by a horse who came apart in the middle. Undoubtedly the nag helped this young lady to land the prize. Mrs. Irene Turner was perâ€" fect as Mammy Yokum (Li‘l Abner‘s mother) of the funnies. She won the comic prize. As King Charles II Mr.T. E. Dahilstrom created a sensation. His features even looked like the Merry Monarch. He deserved (and won) the men‘s fancy costume prize. As Charlie Chaplin, Vladimir Hyrnuk won the men‘s comic priz®. The awards seemed to meet with general favour. A~ very nice lunch was served and it was noâ€" ticed that many willing helpers made the work easy for the firemen. The apâ€" pearance of Mr. E. Rowe during the !evening was a surprise. Judging by his expression and his comments, he thought South End knew how to en joy its fun! Among the costumes noted were:â€"Madame Chrysanthemum . (Dorâ€" is Woods); Rugby player (Johnny Cook); Pierrette (Patsy Uren, Beulah Rayner); Spanish dancer (Miss Barâ€" bas); Oriental (Orry Costain):; beautiâ€" ful Armenian lady (Irene Kaufman): Pirate (Newsham â€" Haneberry, Irene Burke); fireman on parade (B. Maxâ€" wellâ€"Smith); Sheik of Araby (Cyril Waters); Italian Contadina (V. McCatâ€" frey); Robot (excellent) S Pearce; Schoolgirl (Mrs. J. Fell); Pink lady (K. Gallagher); Gypsy (D. Kaufman): Russian (E. Jones) ; Irish Colleéen‘ (Fern Donaldson); Doctor Jekyll (Mona Laâ€" forest); Mr. Hyde (Dr. Woods); Lady in red (Mrs. Ferrigan); Bellhops (Gladâ€" Â¥ys Foster, Mrs. Piccin); Little Red Ridâ€" ing Hood (Mrs. McMurray): Glid fashâ€" loned lady (Joyce Hughes): Cynical SBusie (Mrs. Chambers); Sunbonnet Sue (Mrs. Margerrison). Added to these were policemen, tramps, oldâ€"fashioned and newâ€"fashioned ladies, every type of European, Saturday Night, Follies girl and others too numerous to mention. Hallowe‘en Dance by South End Firemen Many Interesting and Atâ€" tractive Costumes. Muech Fun and Frolic. Other News of South Poreupine and Dome "The detectives were naturally angry. They questioned the boy severely and he finally confessed that his mother had instructed him to clean out the stable but that the job looked too forâ€" midable, so he had concocted the yarn about the high grade. The police were now in a quandary. While they were keen to get even with the lad they knew that if they had him before the magistrate the whole town would dearn of the trick that had been played on them. So they let the matter But he story leaked out just the same and came to the ears of a local mine mzm- ager who was so impressed with the inâ€" genuity of the youngster that he huntâ€" ed him up and gave him a job." went to inspect the stable they found that the debris which two cows can accumulate over a period in the winter months separated them from the floor of the stable but they had to follow up the information to the bitter end. so, equipping themselves with picks, aAxes and shovels they went to work, while the boy looked on with considerâ€" able amusement. At length the stable floor was cleaned and the boards ripâ€" ped up. There was no high grade. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2ND, 1 936
